My mother has a 70s ranch style home with the basic brick planter under the front window. It gets mid day to late evening sun. She normally puts impatience in there - and they look great for such high summer heat - but she is one that doesn't want to replant - she's not the gardener.

In the beginning they put small boxwoods in the planter - but we want color that comes back year after year.

I suggested Stella since they would provide green then yellow flowers. she's not crazy about that idea. Nothing white!

Any suggestions?

Now that's a good idea. But I would like something that would bring color earlier and annuals would do that and about the time the get tired the echies would kick in.

Yes, sadly it does. I LOVE lantana and I tried to overwinter it in the basement and not sure if it will even make that trip.

I still say she should let me continue to get her mothers day plants like I do every year, and I plant them for her. But she just wants to make life simpler but to a gardener who lives to dig, it's not a problem for me. I've put several combinations in there but even with annuals I find it hard to make it look good with all that darn brick. It's so harsh and she has 1 tree in the front yard so it's a bare look.

I'm open to any suggestions now.

Ice plants will take a lot of sun too and will drape over and provide greenery with little pinky purple flowers too, that is if you want to get away from yellow. Though there is a yellow one too, but it doesn't grow as fast as the pink baby sunrose.

P.S. Lord knows I have plenty would be willing to "donate". I tell my kids to not let it touch the ground between the porch to the trash can when I toss the extras. I have to give them a hair cut a couple of times a year.

Good heavens woman, ship me some. They cost about $4 for a 4 inch pot here and I have to chuck them in Fall.
