Last week I came across 2 new plants to me. Both have dark deep purple foliage color.
The leaves on the Ligularia Britt Marie Crawford are very large and look like a wide cabbage leaf on a long black stem.
I planted it directly in front of a older existing tall clump of silver spiky grass named Miscanthus sinensis variegata.
The juxtaposition of the wide deep dark purple leaf looks great in front of the thin spiky silver foliage.
Directly next to this duo is the other new plant to me. It is called Sambucus nigra Eva 'Black Lace'. The foliage is lacy like a fine leaf Japanese maple and is almost black with little hints of dark purple in it.
I planted it next to the silver spiky foliage of the Miscanthus.
In front of the black frilly Ligularia is an existing clump of white and green wide succulent foliage of Sedum spectabilis variegata.

This front border bed is all about strong contrasts.

The color spots in the foreground are orange and purple ( with a new addition of a bright red geum ) .

As the color spots grow in and the strong background gains some height, I'll post another photo.

Here are side by side photos of the composition I described above.

Thoughts on doing strong juxtaposing compositions ?
