Hi PalmBob,
I'm a totally new member of Dave's Garden. I am a novice cactus gardner who is a National Park Service volunteer in charge of maintaining/managing a 20 x 50 foot cactus garden in a National Park Recreation Area of the Santa Monica Mountains. Specifically, Lake Enchanto/Peter Strauss Ranch (located in Agoura, South of the Kanan Road exit of the 101).
Resurrecting a cactus garden that has been neglected for over 20 years has been a real challenge.
But, I saw the overgrown garden (which contained 18 huge agave Americana and over a hundred smaller agaves (Americana and Parasanna(sp)), and went for it. Before joining Dave's Garden last week, I read a number of things available to non-subscribers, and your name/pictures/articles were prevalent. I know you live in the SFV, which is another reason I think you could help me.
Anyway, though succulents are not appropriate (due to cold during the winter- as the garden is in low spot at the base of the SM mountains), I sure could use some help identifying plants as well as defining what cactus do better in cold areas and any other tips that might help me. Can you please tell me the best way to do this??? By contacting people (like yourself individually), posting, or what??? I have had some help from a Master Gardener thusfar, but he is not really into cactus and has other volunteer activities... I need more cactus expertise to make this garden thrive!
Many thanks for ANY guidance you can offer me.
