I relocated from the Hudson Valley in NY to Myrtle Beach SC. I have always gardened and have found a new challenge here. NUT GRASS. Does anyone know how to get rid of it organically? I dig deep to get at the root (12 inches or more) sometimes I get at it and sometimes not. Its driving me crazy. Any help is appreciated
cookiepress, I have the same problem here in Texas so your not alone. I'd be intrested if there is an answer which I don't think there is. I've heard the only control for Nut Grass is chemical herbicides. Which I don't want to use.

That's the ony way I know, and will work finally. Once you get it under control, keeping it so is pretty easy if you spot and remove new growth quickly. Watch out for rotted stable shavings and horse manure, which usually contain nutgrass.
The old folks had two sure fire ways to get rid of nutgrass. 1. a fenced in chicken yard. Chickens love this stuff and will over a year or so time scrtach up every bit of it. 2. A fenced in hog lot, hogs especially love the nuts and will root every bit of it up. Neither of these methods is too practical for the modern suburbanite tho.
