Found it on 25 April taking a rest on a Fatsia Japonica leaf.

It's a female, and I think Syrphus torvus, the yellow stripes are thinner than on Epistrophe melanostoma and I don't think the tail end quite matches. Syrphus torvus has all yellow thighs and darker below like yours too. The face 'frons' looks to match too. In your first pic I can see black hairs at the lower end of the abdomen which match S. torvus.

That must be it, although mine tails end seem to be a little longer and more pointy, specially in my second pict, but that might be due to the angle of the picture.

The tail length is due to it being 'extended', lol, I did have pics with one cleaning itself in this region and it does extend a lot more than that!
