I've seen these all my life and wondered what they will turn into.

Lots of moths pupate under or near the surface of the ground and look like that, especially sphynx moths. Some much larger moths do that too. I found one last year when I was planting bulbs, almost the size of my little finger. Kind of sad, it was cut with the trowel. |

Thanks, I figured it was sort of generic but had to ask.
I placed it back near where i found it, it was gone the next day. |

Hi Andy,
I think that is a cabbage moth pupae. Do you have a lot of those (looking like white butterflies, sometimes with a small black dot on the wing) later in the season. I have tons of them, and I find the pupae in the soil when I am planting.
