This morning, I was walking through a small nursery that I frequent, when I noticed that one of their tree peonies (unnamed but dark maroon w/ yellow stamens) had a branch that was nearly detached from the woody stem, as if it was damaged in moving. I know the owner, so I went in and asked if I could pay her $5-10 or so for the stem, as I wanted to try to root it. She just gave it to me (the benefits of buying a lot of plants over 20 years from someone, and I came home to see if I could get it to root.
Here's what I did: I cut most of the lower leaves off. I dipped the stem in rooting hormone. And I planted it in moist sand. These directions I got from the book "Peonies" by Jane Fearnley Whittingstall. She says there is a 50% success rate.
Any ideas from this board?
By the way, I'm a lurker on this board, and a frequent poster on "Northeast Gardeners" forum.
I bow to the greater wisdom of the peony people here...
