I installed a few birdhouses in my earlier allotted house. However, they were all occupied by squirrels. And they are big enough to drive the birds away. any suggestions?

I'm thinking that if you have squirrels living in them that you have made the holes too big. Try for holes less than 2 inches.

Hmm, I wonder if it's possible to tack a thin piece of wood over the front of the bird house with a smaller hole over the too large one? Less expensive than buying or making a whole new house.

Yes, good idea, I remember my Dad doing that years ago to keep out the Starlings when he made the holes too big...

Squirrels chew, you will have to use something with metal. I have used sheet metal, even tops from cans, and enclosed this in between two pieces of wood. I have had many houses destroyed by squirrels.
Also, put your house on pole with a baffle to keep out squirrels (a major bird nest predator), raccoons, snakes, and others interested in an easy meal.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Yes, I will try a smaller hole of 2" dia for my next birdhouse.
Thanks again.
