ok gardeners have lots of these moments, but here is mine for this spring. I have been growing purple perilla for the last two years. It is quite a lovely thug and I have gotten a system and the places I place it that keeps it contained. To say it is a rampant reseeder is an understatement. I started with just two plants and have given away hundreds and destroyed thousands. I just love it though, it grows in spots that nothing will, like my almost pure rock shady bed , loves our clay soil and looks as pretty as any coleus. So anyway I let it reseed from just two flower spikes in these contained areas so no problem weeding out the extras. This spring I got a leaf vacuum and joyfully vacuumed all the leaves in my yard ( I have pin oaks that dump their leaves in the spring). I then mulched all of my flower beds with the finely shredded leaves, and two days ago I see HUNDREDS of tiny perilla coming up everywhere, in ALL of my flower beds. I had vacuumed the leaves from the areas where I let them reseed. Well DUH!
