I think this is either a canyon towhee or a green-tailed towhee; but can someone positively ID it for me?

Yep, Canyon Towhee. Too grey for Green-tailed.

Raised crown feathers like that is often a sign of anxiety / alarm in birds - maybe you were close to its nest?
