I'm not sure if it is a redbud or not but I may be able to help because I just took a picture of my baby redbuds earlier today so maybe you can compare the picture to the plant you have.

PLANTS555, looks like redbud to me, from what I can see. The redbud leaves are heartshaped and smoothedged, and that seem to be what your picture shows. I'll be interested in the replies, because the ones I've found in my yard are being "saved" as well :)

Whoops! Well, if Rachel1919's is a redbud, then mine sure isn't :(. Think I'll wait to see what else comes up before I trash them, tho...:)

Rachel1919's is NOT a Redbud...100% certain of this.

The first two pics do appear to be of a Redbud.

I agree, Plant's plant looks like a redbud but Rachel's definitely does not.

I ordered mine directly from the Arbor day foundation a few weeks ago and sorry but they are redbuds. They were labeled as such and I know that the leaves are not heartshaped just yet but those are just the first leaves (starter leaves) once it gets bigger they will start to take shape. I have one that is a little older and it started out the exact same way as those little ones and it now has the full heart shaped leaves I can take a picture of that one if you'd like to see. I also have a full grown Redbud. I'll post the pic below.

I'm still not sure about that, I have a redbud which I've had since it was very small (4 inches tall or so) and it never had leaves that looked like that, they always looked like redbud leaves. And Arbor Day is notorious for mislabeling their trees, I can't count the number of people who've posted here just in the last year to get ID's on things they got from Arbor Day that weren't what they were supposed to be. Hopefully yours will turn out to be a redbud, only time will tell! But Plants555's plant is still a redbud regardless so I think this thread is solved.

I got the flowering assortment from an Arbor day promo, and in my shipment Rachel1919's seems to most resemble what was labeled as "Sargeant's Crabapple". I will say that with some of the Arbor day seedlings, it was tough to tell just which color they were, so I can't state categorically. Could have been Washington Hawthorne, I guess. The leaves do look like my crabapple tree. The seedlings I have chosen to think are redbud (grin) have leaves that are heartshaped from "birth".

Sorry Rachel, but only the first set of leaves (the seed leaves) will vary greatly from true leaves.

Yours are a very obvious example of mislabeling...

Should mention that there is only one pair of seed leaves (yours are not even pictured that I can tell)...the leaves your seedlings have are true leaves...which are equal to the mature plant.

Believe us now if you are truly wanting redbud seedlings...maybe the Arbor Day Foundation will send you some actual redbuds.
Send them the pic you have, they will not be able to deny it.

Oh, I am so disappointed!

Webkat, I just emailed The Arbor Day Foundation about the "redbuds" and I also included the picture so I guess we will see what they have to say. The baby trees were doing so well too and I had put them just where I wanted them on either side of a swing in my backyard. Now I'll have to dig them up and relocate them (a big pain)

PLANTS555, so sorry for misleading you I was just trying to help.Won't do that again. It was just such a coincidence that I took pics of my "baby redbuds" that same day. I had no idea that I was misinformed by the people who sold me the trees. Please accept my apologies.

Rachel, don't take them out just yet! If they are the Washington Hawthorne (after I went to look they are more like those) they are very nice bloomers. You might be pushing the envelope on the zone, but since they're already there...

It isn't your fault you were mis-informed. If it helps, I've written The Arbor Day people off, they were incredibly unhelpful when I had a problem. I got my trees (twigs, more like) just as we had a big freeze coming (last year Easter Freeze), and so I potted them rather than put them out to freeze their tiny little leaves off. I called to ask where best to plant them after it was over (the instructions weren't much help) and was instantly told they couldn't help me because I'd put them in pots, and that voided all guarantees. That was that. They wanted no more to do with it. SHEESH! I didn't ask for any replacements, or adjustments, just some help. Never again...

Catmad, I decided not to take them out just yet they seem to like the spot. Considering that just a few weeks ago they were "The Infamous Arbor Day Twigs" hanging on for dear life, I think they are really coming along nicely. I am inclined to believe that they just might be baby Mulberry trees :o) I will put a plant ID post up to see what the consensus is because I don't wanna take over Plants555 thread. Thanks for all the info - the good and the not-so-good too!
