I work at a summer camp and hold the title of Middle School Craft Queen. This summer I am trying to come up with a sophisticated project for our rising 6th through 8th graders. I had thought of doing stained glass on plexiglass due to my budget. Can you suggest some good paints that would dry translucent for the stained glass effect? Again, I am working on a budget but it's not too frugal. Also, are there any general how-tos that I should know?
I saw a few of y'alls projects and they are all beautiful.
Have you ever thought about glass mosaics? You could possibly have a stained glass shop or individual donate their glass scraps; have a lumberyard donate some wood scraps; then just buy some glue and grout. If you want the younsters to be more creative, then provide them with pencils, gloves and a couple of tile nippers to make an actual design. If you don't want to go the glue/grout route (teehee, that sounded silly), then get some clear contact paper, hole punch and fishing line. Have the students press the glass pieces on the sticky side of the contact paper, then press another piece of contact paper, sticky side down, on top of that. Cut out around the edges, punch a hole at the top and string some fishing line through it. If you don't want them handling glass, then have them cut out "mosaic" pieces from colored paper and put that between the contact paper.
Good luck to you. I have seen the paint in craft stores but have never used it. It seemed pretty easy though.
If you went with the glass you could tumble it to take off the sharp edges...of course that is assuming you have a tumbler!!! A homemade tumbler can be made by taking a glass jar putting your glass in it filling it with water up to the glass and then put the lid back on and start shaking it while your watching tv. It takes a little while but it really does work!!!
Those are some neat ideas. Another idea if you have youngsters that want to make stained glass like you but are too young to handle glass -- put crayon shavings between wax paper sheets and then iron them on low heat so that the wax melts and the colors blend. then put that sheet inbetween a few pieces of contstruction paper that you have cut a design out of so that the sun will shine through the holes and brighten up the melted wax.
Thank you for your support. I hope to return with some finished projects - whatever medium they turn out to be in. =)
