| I'm not as excited about the house sparrow family in my winter roosting box as I was about the baby robins in a nest high up in one of our tall spruce trees, but something last week happened to that robin nest. On Thursday the mama was regularly feeding her babies (not even close to fledging) and by Friday there was no more visible activity. I don't know if something happened to the parent bird(s) or just the babies, but whatever occurred, that was the end of this year's birdwatching pleasure of that particular nest.
In winter I rarely see birds enter our multi-perched roosting box that we built (specifically for chickadees) and attached to the garden shed. Over recent springs and summers sparrows had gone wild raising many families in a birdhouse next door and chowing down at my feeders until the neighbors (who show no interest in birds) finally took down the by then dilapidated birdhouse. I imagine some of those birds are now using the bottom floor of our condo-like structure for their own families. Click the image for an enlarged view.

I forgot to mention that the Hummer's have made it up my way. My Brother spotted one, then I saw one at the sanctuary's "backyard habitat."
I found a mini hummingbird feeder at Wal*Mart. The feeder is mini, it's not for smaller than usual hummingbirds. :) When I get it out in the yard I will post a pic. |

| cpartschick - that is definitely the red-headed woodpecker. I have one hanging about in my front yard also. He is so beautiful. Sometimes he flies down onto the ground for a few moments, and then goes back to his "lookout" post on the tree. I think he keeps an eye out for insects moving on the ground and just goes after them. They really are a very beautiful bird.

I have been looking for them since I moved from a place (Little Rock, Arkansas) that had 100' of privet about 30' tall that they would migrate to every fall in waves of 3 - 5 days for each sex/age. It was like a gift of God, and I have never seen them again in the last 40 years. I sure hope to see some at my feeders this year or next. (I'm out-of-my-mind-happy to see your pic!) | Now I'm blushing Elphaba, I was just speaking about that mornings photos, all came out in focus except for the Grosbeak. It seems every shot I take of a House Finch comes out so crisp but when I see a new bird I must get excited and shake the camera. Believe me I have more than my fair share of clunkers and some of those clunkers I am very fond of and then again sometimes I am very fond of the delete key. :-)
Loving all the birds everyone is sharing.

| Me too.
This pair of Red Bellied Woodpeckers have a nest somewhere across the road. They come and eat at the feeder, usually one at a time and then take some food back to the nest. Today, in the rain, they showed up at the same time. Not much light to take these pictures, but wanted to share anyway.

| WOW what amazing photos! Here are our little guys..they grow so much every day...I will certainly try to get out there tomorrow and take some more shots. As I walk around our yard checking out all the planties I am noticing a whole new orchestra! I need to see who is in the bluebird house up top and what families are living in the birdhouse gourd and carved old man face birdhouse on the side of the barn this year. Think I saw a housewren in the gourd. Has anyone ever seen a cardinal nest? We have a couple pairs of mom and dads but have never seen a nest.
