This one is a great link on flickr to design ideas. I need to add my own to that group, just haven't taken the time. A great way when you have the time is to click on the slideshow icon. /groups/374037@N22/pool/
It will allow you to click on the options and add if you want to see the comments. I love that! You can do it on any flickr photo group, mine stuff included. I spend way too much time ooing and awing on flickr! and here at DG!

I started with a free account and then decided to upgrade to a paid one. It was very inexpensive. With the free one you are limited to how many you can upload. I just had an incidence where I lost some photos from my harddrive and luckily I had them saved to flickr. I also just tried their printing and it was cheaper than Walmart. Much nicer quality too!

cactuspatch, your garden is AWESOME! I read that you and your husband are both Master Gardeners. That explains all that beauty. I think you must have the best growing zone in the world judging by the diversity of plants. We live in the Mid-West across from St. Louis and the Mississippi River. Our summers are hot and humid, not the easiest place to garden in the world for sure. I just thoroughly enjoyed looking at the photos you posted.

As I’ve done in several forums I wanted to ask if there might be any photos I might copy and use in my digital art? I was posting a request to a whole forum but it was suggested to me that it might be easier to just ask individuals for permission. I love taking a photo and working with it in my various digital software progs. and turning those photos into what I like to call ‘art’. ;o) Even though your photos aren’t very high in resolution I think I could still work with some and turn them into art. As I told each one who have given me permission so far I’d be MORE than happy to send you a high resolution copy of any art I might create with your particular photo and I’d also make sure that you got credit ON the finished art as the photos original photographer. And so you know I have been saying for a long time that I want to SOMEday try and actually sell the art I create but as of yet I haven’t even tried. Can’t say for sure if I ever actually will but want you to know that it’s a dream of mine so it I were to use a photo of yours it could be one of those works of art. In that case, even if I were fortunate to sell anything and it began with your photo I would gladly send you a free high res. copy for framing. Again…..this has NEVER happened and I’ve been saying I’d like to do it for years now!

Anyway, if you do give me permission, anytime I use one of your photos and turn it into art I’ll happily send you a high res. copy of it. And if you’d rather not let me copy your photos I understand that also. Photography is very personal and not everyone wants their photos copied for any reason. ;o) I have to say you very lucky living where you do. We went through NM a couple of times many years ago and I was blown away by the beauty there. Best of luck to you and your hubby (and your several DARLING kitties!).

God Bless,

Grammy Jo, thanks so much for your lovely comments. I am so happy that you enjoyed my photos. I have sold a few and prefer to not allow others to copy them. That is why I upload a lower resolution in most cases and have that restriction on my flickr photos. I had not done so, but my DD is urging me to make cards to sell from some of my photos. So I know what you mean about planning to do it and not getting around to it!

I would like to see your work? Do you have a website? What software are you using? I think the time I need to spend learning the software is what keeps me from getting more done in that area. Thanks again, Joyce

Joyce, you're very welcome. ;o)

Hmm...that's pretty smart about uploading lower res. photos. I don't care about the ones I post in here and have given permission to anyone allowing me to use theirs to copy and use mine too. But I completely understand about you not wanting anyone else using yours, especially since you’re selling them. Yes, DO make cards. I bet you’d sell a ton of them!

I don't have a website where I post my work as of yet. I do have a Smugbug account I've had for around three years now but haven't even updated it since our last grandson was born (last Oct.). I’ve also started a couple of blogs but must admit that I’m VERY bad about posting to them also (can you tell I'm bad about starting more than I can keep up with?). When I have enough of my work to feel worth offering it for sale I'll set up a web site for that purpose. I’ve told those at D’sG who’ve given me permission to use their photos that I would give them each free copies of anything I used and sold. But since as I said I've been 'talking’ about doing that for years now I think I'll just go ahead and give the pictures to them as they are finished (those I actually use). Otherwise they might never get them at all. LOL I’m planning to post one that I used of a beautiful orange Calendula very soon. I hope ken33 likes it!

I LOVE ‘Corel Paint Shop Pro PhotoXI’ (formerly ‘Jasc PSP’). It's not extremely hard to learn...very good and the program I use most. Another great software is ‘Virtual Painter 5’. I get some wonderful effects with it too. I also have ‘Adobe Photoshop CS3’, another good program for digital work. I have some others too but these three are my faves. By the way, you can get ‘Adobe Photoshop7.0’ for practically free and it's quite good as is, even though it's outdated. It was the program I mainly used to teach myself. In fact you may BE able to download it for free. Google it and check it out. I’ve also used ‘PrintMaster Platinum 16’ for years to make cards, labels, stickers, etc. Its tools are pretty ‘crude’ but it’s ‘learning curve’ is pretty simple. I can whip up a nice card in PM with MY graphics pretty fast after all this time using it. You SHOULD take the time to learn. If you've ever done digital work with photos then you know how much fun it is. I'm 'self-taught' with all of my programs and if I can teach myself so can you! You just have to ‘dive in’. Good luck. ;o)

Thanks for the info. I know what you mean about "biting off more than one can chew" I have many "ufos" unfinished objects--both in fabric, digital and otherwise.

I have Adobe PS Elements 4 and found it a bit difficult. Now I am just working with the software that came with my Canon camera. I like it a lot and most of my photos are kept realistic on my cards. I have been using either my old Finepix camera software or a Hallmark card studio program. I have been printing them out myself. I just recently had an order done by the printers linked to flickr and they were excellent. Much better quality than our Walmart and cheaper with free shipping. I even had one photo enlarged and printed onto canvas, I love it!

A canvas print…..Wow...how cool is that?! I'll have to give that a try too. I guess I'm just a 'frustrated' artist at heart and even though I love leaving mine plain I have a real fondness for turning them into 'paintings'. The sad fact is that most of my photos are still ON my PC (or DVDs). AARG I'm so bad about printing them myself, though I do on occasion and they are excellent. Maybe I'll get a flickr account and try that for prints (did THEY do the canvas print or did you get that somewhere else?). I think I can get them printed at Smugmug too so should check into that (since I DO pay for it after all ;o) I have Hallmark too (well actually their 'Scrapbook Factory'). I use those graphics in PrintMaster a lot.

Nice photo. I am now back to learning PSE 4. The cold weather gives me more time to do such tasks!

I also added more photos and made a set to tour my garden. Another DG member suggested I do so, thought I would share the link here too.

Great! Glad you enjoyed it. I don't recall meeting you. But our paths could have crossed. My DD lives in Rio Rancho and has been in the Abq. area for 20 years. I love the the southern part of NM best and only get up north to see my DD. I also love AZ. It has so many wonderfully beautiful places to play with my camera.

Those hollyhocks are beautiful, as are the larkspur(or are they delphiniums?) I was just reading in a garden book published by Reader's Digest about minature hollyhocks..but it doesn't give anymore information. Are you familiar with these or know where I can find information about them? Are those california poppies planted near the scabiosa? Never grown poppies of any variety, but have added them to my Wish list for 2010..My dear MIL said her Mother used to grow them and they would take them to market to sell on Saturdays. Are they invasive?

I have larkspur and CA poppies in my yard. They both reseed where there is water, so no they are not invasive here. If you click on each photo individually you will find ID's. I would do an internet search to find the books you mention. Amazon would be the best one is my guess. Good luck!

How do you go about planting some of those beautiful cactus plants you have? Do they start out as small plants and grow that fast? Is the pottery place called Henlopian still there in Santa Fe or Albuquerque? No wonder my cousin likes to live there in Santa Fe..the beauty is amazing. We've never been fortunate to be out in Phoenix area when the cactus were blooming. They say it is beautiful and when I see all your photos, I can see what we have missed. How many cats do you have? They are all beautiful and very photogenic too. Looks like they enjoy lazing about in the beautiful sunshine. I wrote down some of your flower varieties and want to see if I can find them here in Md. come next Spring or maybe I'll have to order them from a flower catalog. Where do you find most of your plants? Local or flower catalog? Did you have to have all the rocks(big and small)bought in or do you just go out in the mountains and valleys and pick them up? Loved the balloons, especially Old Smokey Bear..my SIL used to be on one of the "chase teams" there in Prescott Valley, AZ. Thanks for sharing all of this beauty with us!

I just answered you dmail. But here goes again. Many of the cactus are natives and we just moved them from the desert out back of the property. We use leather gloves and cardboard wrapping them. I dont' think the Nursery you mentioned is still in the north? Not sure I am 3 hours to the south of Albuquerque and get up there some but not real often.
I have 4 cats, one is 17 and on her "last leg" They do love their supervised visits into paradise! LOL!

Most of my plants are passaglongs from friends or seeds I find locally. I did order most of the roses from Jackson and Perkins and have good luck. But then roses love the desert, afterall they are mostly grown in AZ for the trade.

Many of the rocks were collected on different hikes around southern NM, but most were here on the property. I dug most of the holes for the flower beds with a pickax and used the rocks I unearthed to edge the walkways. It was fun but I wouldn't want to do it again! LOL! We are in the foothills of the Sacramento Mts. which gives us beautiful views, cooler air than my friends down in the town of Alamogordo and we don't get much wind here--but it is rocky. Glad you enjoyed the photos, I enjoy taking them. ; )
