The sun is shining and it's 72 degrees outside, and I'm in here programming on the Marketplace. See how committed to DG I am? :-)

I'm setting up the categories right now, and need some help. I'm going to setup some basic top-level categories, and then you (as seller) will specify which category your product goes under when you list it. You'll only be able to choose one category (we will likely change that later).

So, the question is: what categories do we want to start off with? Keep in mind, these should be broad top-level type categories. Here's what I had in mind:

1) Live plants
2) Seeds
3) Arts and Crafts

What else?

Daylilies
Iris
Hosta
Vegetables & Fruits
Roses
Herbs
Bulbs
Shrubs, Trees & Vines
Perennials
Annuals

Garden Tools
Planters & Pots
Birds & Wildlife

Good feedback so far, thanks!

I will break it down even further, but for now we're going with just a top-level category. In the coming weeks we will break it down even further with sub-categories.

That differentiation will occur when nested sub-categories becomes available.

The 'live plants' should maybe have a 'tropicals' category? And I have put my plumeria cuttings in that category since I couldn't find anything that fit it better.

How about "gardening supplies" for tools, amendments, etc.?

Ha! Looks like I'm way behind in following these threads! :o)

Watching for the "arts and crafts" category.

"Other" as catchall category. You could also go with Garden and House like the forums as a starting point.

I don't know if we want an other/catch-all category, I thought we wanted to keep the focus on garden related and arts & crafts, and also to avoid this being like Ebay where everyone sells whatever junk they have lying around. So one way to avoid the junk and keep things focused is to only have specific categories, that way Dave has more control over what's being sold. If you have something you want to sell that doesn't fit an existing category, then maybe we could have a process for requesting a category to be added.

I was thinking from a buyer's perspective of a way to get stuff I don't want to have to browse through into a different category. But if that stuff is not allowed at all, that's a solution.

I agree with Dave on no pet sales. There is no way to police or guarantee responsible pet sales, and if unscrupulous sellers show up (which they eventually will), it will be the animals who suffer. Dave doesn't have to assume that sort of responsibility here at DG.

Right, and there are more backyard breeders than responsible breeders, and I don't want to give the backyard breeders a place to sell their "product".

Could the bulbs category be expanded to include rhizomes and corms? Many people refer to all irises as growing from bulbs (instead of rhizomes), so if they're looking for irises, they may look under the bulb category. If rhizomes and corms were added to the bulb category, then it really wouldn't matter what folks think irises grow from. They'd still end up in the right category in the Marketplace.

Maybe just expand the name to "bulbs, corms, rhizomes" that will cover the full array of possibilities.
