I was hoping to get a second opinion about this. We have a peony bush (unknown type) that last year had a few tiny buds that never turned into flowers. This year, there seem to be more but they are literally smaller than a pea. Some of them have even tinier second buds next to them, which I don't remember noticing last spring. There were some ants crawling on them but the buds have not continued to enlarge.
I was not sure whether this might be because the peony is still young - I just moved in but believe this is only the third spring it has grown up.
We haven't done any particular fertilizing, and it gets an eastern exposure. A neighbor to the south has great peony bushes with similar exposure, but likely a bit more sun.
Thanks!
