I do not have a "Sibley's, but in Stokes 1996 ed. page 472, looks like the "Gray-headed" race. To be honest I didn't notice the unusual color until I looked at the Pictures blown up on a 24" computer screen. It just looked like a normal Junco looking, out the kitchen window.

| Hello everyone.
What a duckie start to the new thread Gary. Very nice & a handsome Junco too.
Heatwarming family portrait kniphofia! So sweet. I love that little one looking right at you.
Beautiful twofer threefer dellrose. All are great looking birds and really nice photos.
I have one new one. A small flock of Western Tanagers has discovered the orange halves in the Honey Locust Tree. They have been here for a couple of days. So now I have Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeak, Verdin, Northern Mockingbirds, Thrashers, House Finch, and Western Tanagers eating oranges. It is a very busy tree. Good thing the oranges were 10 for 89 cents. I had one last night and boy was it sweet & juicy. Good crop! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Oh my gosh Rose, you take the most awesome pictures! I just LOVE them! :-)
Edited to add, I don't see some of those birds here. Probably because I am in the woods and some of those like fields?
I am still watching for my Red Headed Woodpeckers. I haven't seen them yet this Spring. :-(

| Nanny, I saw several RW blackbirds over the weekend. We were traveling in an area with a lot of catfish farms and wheat fields so these birds were sitting on the utility wires all up and down the highway. Never got a chance to take a pic though |

| dellarose, nice shot of the brown thrasher. I stalked one yesterday afternoon hoping to get a picture but it was not cooperative. I saw several flying loops over a pine grove and I could hear them singing so beautifully but everytime I got close they "lit a shuck"! |

| Wow a hundred posts in 24 hours. How can I keep up.
First great head shot of the mallard, gras. They are common, but soooo handsome.
dellrose, better shot of the redhead? That is a great shot. Looks like it should be in my birdbook. Haven't seen one after the fleeting glance last week (first time)
Adel, 99.6'...didn't you just have snow a couple weeks ago?
I did see a humming bird yesterday. Only 42' outside. kind of cold, but I got my feeder out. Hope he comes back.
Great posts everyone! |

| Excellent photos everyone. There are so many beautiful birds it is hard to pick a favorite.
One of my favorite birds, however, is the Yellow-breasted Chat. For several weeks I have heard this unique voice in the meadows but unable to see him. This weekend, I finally caught a quick glimpse, and photo, of one some distance away.. Once you hear their call you won't forget it. Click the image for an enlarged view.

This photo really doesn't do justice to the surreality I felt early Saturday morning ... caused by the shadows and morning sunlight cast upon a small pond. The Canada Goose had just left her nesting site for an early morning swim. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| All these great photos are inspiring me to learn my camera better. So I offer you all a rare glimpse of a ... pigeon!
These band-tailed pigeons migrate to a nearby field near the water, but they decided to hang around my place this year. I was very surprised to see them as I've never seen a pigeon here in town before. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Hi Linthicum...The yellow-breasted chat was the bird responsible for getting me interested in birdwatching. I was so intriqued by it's unusual sounds and with the fact I couldn't get a glimpse of it for the longest time but once I finally ID'd it I was hooked. I had gotten some video of it last year but it was this year before I got a picture of him. Mine's not as good as yours though but I was proud to finally get one after all that stalking I did! |

| Too much excitement for me today! All of a sudden a couple of Thrashers got very agitated in a Ephedra plant right next to my yard near the place I feed and water the birds.
In this photo you can barely see two thrashers and a sparrow in the shrub. There is something else in the shrub (bottom left) but you can only see it in the original size. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| There must of been a dozen birds or more attacking this rattlesnake. He was striking at them and they were not backing down.
My husband was out running errands but when I called him he said "I'll be right there - I'm coming down the street now"
He relocated the Rattler in the desert away from our home. The birds were watching him from nearby shrubs and I believe he is their hero! :-) Click the image for an enlarged view.
