Thanks for all the info. I have bluebird houses, and didn't know
that the block of wood "hole guard" is no longer recommended.

Bluebirds overwinter here, and I suppose that they need their nests
for protection on cold nights, so I don't clean them out until March

My husband recently saw a blue bird in our yard, first ever! I loved your article, it would be so neat to have a nesting pair. Now I know what we need.

Really nice article Marna!

Makes me wish that BB's weren't so shy of the city. :)

I wonder if you can find some at Gompers Park RD. Next time you are there, look for a trail of boxes.

Marna, thanks for a great article! We don't have blue birds here, but I built a seed box for the Robins. They already have a nest under our roof. It's great to have so much information about building a bird house!

Thanks Adina! That's a very cute seed box.

I built a similar nest box for the American Robin. The house sparrows immediately took it over. Sigh.

Oh, that's a shame! Some sparrow came to my seed box too at first, when I started to put bread crumbs, but then I just put sunflower seeds and only the Robins like it...no more sparrow!
