It's Pieris japonica. The white flowers and the new red shoots in spring look very nice.

Where have you tried it? They like acid soil and in a hot summer climate they'd appreciate afternoon shade.

Hi ecrane3,
I have tried it in a south location shaded by a large maple tree.It received morning sun and a little late afternoon sun. Before it was in a location receiving sun only in the morning. Now it is in a large pot.It doesn't die,it just sits there. As soon as it starts making new leaves, others die.I have the same problem with it's relative Leucothoe.I ammended the soil to be more acidic before planting them and have even fed them with Miracid.Mine were originally starter plants.Maybe I should purchase a larger plant.I know they grow here, because they have large ones at the local nursery.Any help would be welcome.

That's possibly 'Debutate' or 'Prelude'. Short growing cultivar.

I would probably start a new thread in the beginner gardening forum for advice on why you've had problems--I hate to hijack ditzynitz's thread before s/he has had a chance to come back here and let us know whether they're happy with the ID on the original plant. Plus when your question has its own thread in the proper forum you'll get more answers too since more people will notice it.
