Lillyfan, I got your block yesterday WOW, I love it...the abstraction you did is great too ;)
I did the one I kept for me in blue and white also, but I liked the brown and white I did for Bbeth, gonna do another for my "sampler". I have been doing most of my practice squares in same colors requested by the other quilters, figured it will make for a very interesting "sampler" quilt. Here's a pic of the one I sent 2pugs
Barefoot, Glad you liked it, I saved it and qwilters blocks for last because I thought they were going to be the hardest, they were, but went together much easier than I could have hoped for.
My DD is a blue fan so I am doing a sampler quilt for her with all the blocks we have done in this swap, I'm using about two dozen or so different prints in the quilt so it should end up quite interesting.
Hi everyone. I finally took out my sewing stuff again and am getting myself organized. I have received 5 blocks so far. Thank you to Gourd, ByndeweeBeth, BarefootT, and Llilyfan...and to one other person, but I don't remember who sent the 5th block to me. I'm very sorry for not keeping better track of things! If the block in the lower left corner of this pic is yours, will you please let me know? Thank you!
mgh, I was not happy with the end result of your block and I'm redoing it. I like the fabric i chose so I'm hopeful of the end result. I practiced on another block and it turned out so I'm ready to retackle yours!
I was telling my NY quilting buddy that I had no stash as I took it all to Florida, so she took pity on me and shared from her scraps, and stash, too. It is so lovely to have something to choose from and not have to run to the store just to make a few kids blocks. I feel blessed to have such a good friend. I love my new choices in primary colors.
AW yes, Mittsy! This illustrates one of the many reasons it is soooooo important to make quilting addicts out of ALL of our friends, so they can share their stash! Great selection you are blessed!
Mittsy, I mailed off 3 blocks to you. Only one seems to be the "correct size" but I didnt' want to "waste" any, I think you will be able to use them all. That was a very fun & enjoyable block, thanks for the great selection!
Sorry friends, I am headed out of town for a week so I will not be sending any more blocks for a bit.
psych2 I got your blocks, I already modified the center of the small one to make it work. Here's the picture. Thanks for the extras. I'll put them to good use. Between the hospital and project Linus, no block goes unused! Will post the fire motif one later.
I have a question. On BarefootT's block, when you are making the little squares for around the edge, couldn't you make the bars 1.5" X 7" and then cut that piece into 4 - 1.75" rows? (This doesn't include the corner blocks since there are only 2 of those.) Seems like that would be easier than putting all those little pieces together. I guess they would be in a pattern though instead of being random.
Edited because I put the wrong person's block. LOL
Ok, so if anyone is still watching this thread and it's not just me typing to myself, I think my first thought was right...if you want to do it this way. Although, you might want to make your bars a little longer to trim them up and have them look nice.
Yes, MGH, when I do a pieced border I usually try to do it in the same fashion you suggested. IF I get REALLY concerned about "avoiding a pattern" I throw a few random blocks in after cutting the "row" of border.
Oh good! I'm not talking to myself! LOL I was beginning to wonder if all this rain and bad weather was going to my head! LOL I shouldn't complain...we have no snow and aren't flooded out. I'm praying for those who are.
Yes, I am talking about strip piecing. I know if I tried to do it with all the little squares I either would be completely nuts or the border would look terrible.
No problem, psychw2. :o) I've just been a sewing fool the last few days. I think I have 4 or 5 done now...I get interrupted a lot having to do things for the family. Imagine, I still have to be a wife and mom while I'm trying to sew?? LOL
Just got my block mgh, thank you its beautiful! Did you happen to take a picture of it? If you would post it I'm sure the others would love to see it. I keep thinking "this week" I'll master the whole digital camera & post, so far it has not happened!
my block for qwilter will go in the mail on monday, and I have one left to do for this swap, mittsy, I am searching for that box of fabulous Kid fabric...;o) , sorry to keep you waiting, but I know I've got some stuff that will be great with the blocks you have...
Ladies... how is everybody doing on getting all their blocks done & mailed? Please aim at getting them all delivered in the next couple of weeks. For some of us, that means we had BETTER HURRY!!! Assess where you are & strive to get the remaining blocks done.
If anyone found my block too challenging, please consider doing a simpler one in Red, White & Blue. The blocks I have received are amazing! Thank you all you skilled dedicated people!
I posted in the original as Aug 1 thinking it would take a while to get enough sign ups, so YES, you have until Aug 1. Just wanted everybody to take stock of where they are so HOPEFULLY everyone will be done by then.
Thank you... I mailed them all Tues.
It's amazing, I have 3 post offices near me. Although I mailed all the blocks in the same envelope, each PO charged me a different rate. The ones mailed before the rate hike were more than the 2nd group I send. And this past group more than either of the other 2.
Yeah, it's CRAZY! A few of my trades have come "postage due" even though the person took it to their local PO and had it weighed and had postage put on it from the machine. I guess the local PO thought it wasn't enough and charged me. I wish they would all get on the "same page"!
sorry I haven't posted but I received mgh's block last some time almost two weeks ago and mean't to post.. THANk you mgh.. I really like it and it fits very well with the others. I think I've gotten 6 blocks so far, but I'll count them to make sure.. I have not made my own yet.
Those are really nice.. this winter we are all going to be busy..
The block for 2pugs was mailed yesterday..
I'm done guys.. Thank you all for everything and this has been fun, I enjoyed making and learning how to make all these blocks.. I have one of everyone's block and plan to make a DG lap quilt with them. Maybe put them all around my blocks. What are you all planning to do with your's? It will be a challenge for me, but I think it will work.
Hi everyone, I do have a confession to make. I have been making quilt blocks and sending them out without my name on them. I didn't want anyone to feel like they had to make me one. Since I did drop out because of my health. But let me tell you I have been receiving some very beautiful blocks from a lot of you. The ones I have send are as follows:
I have one for Psychw2 that will be going in the mail in a day or two. I usually wait until I have at lease 2 or 3 ready to mail before I go to the post office.
They have been helping me with my memory. Chemo not only wipes out your blood cell count but it does wipe some of the memory cells as well. When I have a lot of problem sewing one my husband gives me a hand. I really thought I would have problems with Phychw2's block but it went together pretty good. I still have problems with that scant 1/4 seam.
I am trying to get all the blocks done. About next Thursday I will start going through my tired spell. I am taking chemo this week and about 5 to 6 day afterward I start getting tired, with my blood count dropping. So if you don't get one from me before that I should start to feel better around the 24 or the 25 of July then I can start again. You never know during my tired spell I still may feel like sewing.
I hope you don't mind receiving blocks from me, since I did drop out. But if you can't use the block in your quilt maybe you can make a pillow or something out of it.
Linda, it's so good to see you posting! Glad to hear you are able to do some sewing too. I know it helps me take my mind off of things. Hope it helps you that way too.
I still have Qwilter's to redo (it came out too small), Got2B's and mine to do...and am planning to still do one for you, Linda...I already have the fabric. I have Beth's done and need to send it. I think that is it for me. If not, please let me know!
I have a day set aside next week to work on as many of the blocks as I can. I have been in a deep funk with piles of work stacking up. I'll get it done, just taking me a while...
Linda/2pugs, so good to see you back. I have thought of you often & wondered how you have been doing. The tiredness is a bummer but you will get thru it. You are lucky to have a sweet supportive husband. ~ Pat
Linda, it is good to see you posting.. Thank you for making my block, but, I certainly did not expect one.. I just wanted to make sure you were included with our group.. I plan to keep this group of blocks together as a friendship quilt. Keep on trucking and keep up your treatments... you are in my prayers.
here is the block i got from qwilter, sorry it took so long to post, camera had some "user" issues, still dont know what i was doing, but i could not get pics to download, and when they finally did, i could not find them... had to wait for computer/camera help from the hubby..so here it is at last..another BEAUTIFUL block.
Thanks everyone, Ive got to tell you...the block color choices by llily and gourd, in this swap, and bbeths block from the 12 month swap were my inspiration, so a "special" thanks to you three ladies ! all that gold, brown, cream, and green, made me think nature, and fall.. so I threw in the dark brown, and orange, and leaves, and viola a quilt is born !!!
I am all done with the blocks for this swap, last ones are on their way, I certainly hope you have all liked the choices I made for you. I have loved every block I have received so far.
This has been a great swap :-) I have have learned a lot, and come to like many more color combinations, My horizons have been very broadened! indeed. and I think we need to do another swap, like this..??
my first block, to make a 9 patch with mitty's directions, I have cut a 5" strip off of all the bright fabrics in my stash, and some random 5" squares from scraps, I am anxious to really get into this one!!! Thanks for the inspiration mittsy :-).
I STILL don't have all of mine done, I'm trying, I'm trying, I PROMISE!!!
I would be willing and able to organize another swap if there is enough interest. I will post an interest thread and work out the details over the next couple of weeks
We could organize another one that has aspects of this swap AND the other swap combined. Let's kick it around on a DIFFERENT thread so we don't bore those who KNOW they do not want to participate in another one.
How is everybody doing? Just about done sending out your blocks? Deadline is approaching so please do your best to get your remaining ones done. If you are TOTALLY STUMPED and can not do the pattern, please communicate with the other participant, don't leave them wondering.
The blocks have all been wonderful and I hope you all have had a good time participating. I'd like to start ANOTHER thread for displaying the completed projects in a couple of weeks. ~ Pat
My daughter and granddaughters are currently visiting with us this week. My daughter needs a baby shower gift and really likes the colorful blocks. She'll get the first one crib size and I'll embroider the baby's name in one of the center blocks. Now I have a goal to get it finished. I'll post pictures of the progress. She's paying me $35.00 which will help us buy more batting for our hospital project quilts.
Does anyone have a brothers machine? I think I remember seeing somewhere that some of you do. I am thinking about a new machine and have been eying the brother 6000i, I am not at all interested in machine embroidery, but some of the fancy stitches look interesting, I just want a GOOD machine for quilting, want to try my hand at machine quilting. I have done a few very small pieces, but not quilts. as of now i hand quilt everything, tie a few, but mostly hand quilt. my machine is 25 - 30 years old, does straight stitch, and a zig-zag!!! and thats it...any thoughts or suggestions?? thanks..Thunder
I have a Brothers Pacesetter ULT2003D. It does just about everything I want it to do. Embroidery, sew forward and backward, needle threader, bobbin winder just by pushing a button. I can remember having a machine that didn't sew backwards, but all these extras are wonderful. I love my machine. I just wish I could afford a new one, they have come a long way since 2003 when I got mind.
I bought a new Brother basic machine last winter. I bought it at Hancock Fabrics. It was on sale for $149.00. The beauty of it is that it weighs only 5 pounds. It is a great machine for quilting. I take it to all my classes and service work days.
I have been thinking about buying one like yours Mittsy because there are times I could be embroidering and sewing on a quilt at the same time. Also I don't sign up for any classes because I didn't want to haul my machine around with me. But I know I could handle a 5 lb. one. I know our Wal Mart used to carry Brothers don't know if they still do or not haven't checked them out.
wal-marts carry some brother machines, different stores have different machines in stock, and other brother machines can be ordered on line, with site to store delivery (free) you pick it up at the store, instead of it going to your house. that is how I'm thinking of getting mine. the brothers dealer in my area has only the high end machines, starting at $599.00, I'm not in the position to pay that much, and I don't think I would use all the bells and whistles...the 6000i comes with an extra (larger) bed, quilting foot, walking foot, 60 pre-programmed stitches, drop feed, sells for $179.00, weighs 10 pounds, so moving it around would be very do-able...
barefootT, it sounds like we might have the same machine! LOL I got mine about 15 years ago. It does forward, backward, and zig zag. It still runs great, but I'd love to have some bells and whistles. ;o)
I have not received blocks from psych, 2pugs, got2B
my old faithful, still runs good, but I do want some of those bells LOL.I would like to try machine quilting on larger pieces, and do not think the old one would be good for that.
got 2, that block is gorgeous.
I am pretty sure I have decided to go with a dark green sashing for my scrappy stars, got to go to the fabric store and look some more ;-}
barefootT - I know I told you mine would go out last Saturday, (or was it the Saturday before?) but I couldn't get away from work to drop it in the mail. Now that the "fall block" swap is going, I will put both in the same package. I should get them out this week. (promises, promises!)
There are a few people that I haven't received blocks from either and I am considering providing an alternate block. I made up the dimensions but I'd like someone to check them before I post them here.
Any volunteers out there willing to check my math, that are more knowledgeable than me out there?
Got2bg, I am one that has NOT mailed. I really think I can do yours. I'm so sorry to be sooooo slow! I'm going to try to finish up a couple more today. Some of the patterns were really tough for a Newbie Quilter like me!
I have two that needs to be mailed, and 3 to make. I have 7 ready to mail from the new swap, so I plan on getting them and the other 2 in the mail either tomorrow or Wednesday (I promise). So this afternoon I will start on the three I need to finish and maybe just maybe I can get them in the mail before the week is up.
I made the original pattern you chose. I did have some problems, but I am still trying to fix it, so I think I will make the new block and send them both to you.
I mailed out everyones today except for yours got2Bgreen and it should go out Thursday. Give the mail at least until Saturday or Monday and if everyone that I owe a block to hasn't received them let me know. Just in case I messed up on something.
I am finally done. Got the other block for got2Bgreen finished and they both are in a envelope ready to be mailed.
got2bgreen, my favorite tone on tone is the white paisley you used in your block. We used to have a craft store called the Rag Shop. I bought 10 yards of that fabric and I am just about at the end of it. Do you know where you got yours?
Nice blocks mgh but I may have to do that one again - I am sooo not happy with it.
Mittsy - I got all three of the center fabrics at the same store around the same time frame, 10-12 years ago. I think it was called Creative Crafts and Frame Shop. The white and the center pinwheel fabric were both part of a month-by-month quilt block pattern they had at the time - it was called Shades of Green. I've worked on it little by little and I should have it completed by the end of August. That's my goal anyway. I was never able to dedicate myself to quilting the way I can now.
This is the most recent block for that quilt top that I've completed.
Got2B, that purple is beauuuuutiful, and I love birds, Don't be sad about it (tho I know the feeling) Just keep in mind all of the great things you have made with it :-} and I'm sure there are many!!!!!
That block of the month is very nice, I like that pattern!
Soooo has anyone gotten anything put together, with their blocks yet? I am pretty sure I want to do a dark green sashing with mine, if I can find "the right one" It is hard to think of fabric shopping (you know how we can spend.) when I am trying to save for a new machine!!!!!
Put together and ripping out. This political correctness has gone way, way too far. My daughter picked my blocks to be made into a baby quilt, crib size for a baby gift for one of her managers. She recently had a baby boy. The mother is Jamaican so my daughter took one look at it and said "You have to take that watermelon block out, it could be offensive!" I hate ripping out when it is unnecessary, but I'm doing it. I love that block. What's wrong with watermelon?
How is everybody doing? I am still working on some, don't give up hope on me yet. Embarrassing to be this late, especially when I am the hostess! *sigh*
Use your own judgement if you want to email anyone you did not get a block from. I have mine together but have not "checked off" any list to know if I have one from everybody. Do whatever feels right to you.
I only have Got2Bgreen's left to do. I tried doing her alternate pattern and keep coming up short. I haven't tried her paper piecing pattern yet though. She knows where I live though, so she can come razz me about it anytime. ;o)
I got mail today !! a block from 2pugs, another scrappy star ;-}
the colors are fantastic, I see inspiration here for another whole quilt...black and white, with touches of red, green and yellow...hmmmm
MGH, I was not happy with the block I sent you, it was not "crisp" enough on the points. Today I redid your block and I'm mailing it out with a "bonus" to redeem myself!
EVERYBODY If you have NOT received the block I sent by this Tuesday, there is a PROBLEM! I have mailed EVERYBODY's now. I would have thought they would be there by now but I have not seen them acknowledged.
Hi psychw2. It might have come yesterday, but I think I checked the mail too early. I'll go look again in a bit here and let you know. If it hasn't already come and it comes tomorrow or the next day, I won't be able to let you know until Wednesday. Thanks for the bonus! I'm excited to see them!
WOW that is cool, wish I had a quilting machine in the family!!! I just can't give up the time to hand quilt and it seems such a shame to "tie' a beautiful quilt. Maybe in my next life??? Sure isn't going to be this one!
And this one from 2PugDogs. It's not in the primary colors so here goes another whole quilt with a black, white, pink and Frog theme, love it. I have received all of my blocks. Thank you everyone.
When I have finished this quilt, I'll post a photograph before sending off to my daughter. She's purchasing for a baby gift. I get $35.00 which goes to buy batting for my charity quilts. It's a Win-Win transaction.
I first got some from a little quilt shoppe in Newkirk Oklahoma and she ran out. Then I checked ebay out and found it. This person had a lot of fabric that tired in with it. So I got it. Now I have a lot of it. But I like it.
Yup! I used everyones plus two that I made. I'm trying to decide what to do for the sashing. Do you think a red print with a white pattern would distract too much from the block? How about white with red pattern?
I vote red with MAYBE a very small patterned black. One thing about it, you can buy a 1/8 yard and lay a few strips over it to visually check your opinion then. You don't have to invest in the WHOLE yardage to figure it out. Is there a deep red in batik you could use? That would be very nice I think.
I had thought about black, but didn't think of both black and red. I like the idea of using eighths to see but none of the fabric shops I go to have eighths. There is one downtown that has them but I rarely go there.
I'll probably go with narrow black and a darker red.
2pugs, love that frog block.
got 2B, great top, I vote for black narrow border, and then a wide red one..butt your vote is the most important one...
I got a great block from psych, another beautiful scrappy star, I have to get batteries for the camera, seems the rechargeables don't want to charge any more..boo hooo..
here is the block I received from psychw2, I think this means I have received all the blocks for this swap, now I've got to decide how I want to put it together...This swap has been GREAT thanks all !!!! :-} I received all lovely blocks, and enjoyed making some new ones.
I will of course continue to follow this thread, and post results, as I proceed...
A GREAT BIG THANKS TO ALL , specially psychw2 for hosting...
Has EVERYBODY received ALL of their blocks? If not, please contact the person who has NOT sent the block directly AND me. Also, as Mittsy said, please post pictures of your work in progress. Its been a pleasure hosting this swap and I will be doing more in the future. Anyone who has feedback for what you liked and didn't like about this swap, please do NOT be shy. We can only make changes and meet your needs when you share your ideas.
I have another swap going and what we did different from this swap is that everyone picked their block to sew and sent the same block pattern to everyone in the colors they requested. This will yield a quilt that resembles a "sampler" quilt in that the colors will coordinate but the blocks will be different.
I have noticed the blocks chosen for the new swap seem to be a little easier than what was chosen for THIS swap. Also, it seems to be going much faster. The advantage is you pick a block you are comfortable making, something at your current level of skill. The disadvantage is that you do not "grow" and improve as you are not assigned something more difficult that you personally would not have picked. WHAT DO YOU THINK?? Your feedback and suggestions will help shape the next swap.
My husband came in and saw me down on the floor laying out blocks and said is that one of your swaps, the colors really don't go together, do they. A while later he came back and said wow those look nice. I had sliced, rswapped and rotated the quarters, then sewed them into blocks. My mom, age 89 comes in and says oh, are you quilting on the floor today. Table too cluttered to work there? Well I needed more room than my cutting table would provide. Just wanted to let you know I am making progress, it's just s l o w going.
You would be surprised at how different that pattern looks if you flip the fabric choice for the two ends, putting the large triangle against the small triangles in the same print. I like it even better flipped, I experimented with a few I made for sample quilt for myself.
I've been fine. Facebook just sucked me in. It is my goto when I set down at the computer now.
housse - yes it is a Christmas gift - to me. I am going to keep this one and all of the ones I've done with blocks from the DG ladies. It doesn't feel right to give them away when everyone put so much effort into making them for me.
