I was helping a friend in her yard the other day and we came across the plant below. She had never seen it before and I have no idea what it is. It had a single woody stem, leading me to believe it is some type of sapling. This is one of many shoots coming off of the main stem. The dark red pod like things are where the leaves emerge, the plant was covered in them. It looked like some type of pepper plant from a distance with all of the red "pods". Can someone help?
Can't tell you what kind of tree it is, but the "pods" are some sort of insect damage... the insect may be one that rolls up the leaves, and lays eggs inside.
Please open up one of those "pods" and tell us if altagardener is right. That would be creepy and very cool. I love bizarre situations like this and nature provides plenty to keep me intrigued!
