I grow the Japanese Hakone 'All Gold' in a large pot, with a few annuals such as coleus and pansies. In the fall I remove the annuals and set the pot on my compost pile and pile it high with leaves we've blown off the lawn. It comes through our zone 5 winter with flying colors. Here's a picture.
