Thanks for this data Ian, I always had the feeling that man should not take genetics as a Russian roulette game. And though the most obvious and direct threat comes from GM pollen pollination all the laws set behind are as deadly, rich nations now know they cannot rule the world with guns so will do it with modified seeds and iniquitous laws. In France we have this active association by the name of Kokopelli who works to save old veggies seeds and is always suited by big companies and often looses...bad news for the future.
A documentary film, "The World According to Monsanto", came out recently in France. It has been dubbed and is available on YouTube, but I don't have the link. "Le monde selon Monsanto" is the title in French, I think. Jacques, or anyone else, have you seen it?
I'm so happy to hear about the Canadian lawsuit. Ecstatic, actually. It's way beyond time for someone to rein in Monsanto. Part of the problem is that the US patent office, which refused to patent plant material for many years, finally succumbed to corporate pressure in the 1980s and started issuing patents. That's when the GM industry sprang to life.
As for a solution, I think we'll find one when we start revoking corporate charters and sending CEOs to prison for their crimes. Until then, they will rule the lawmaking process and the legal process.
Hi Picante,
Actually my wife ordered the movie 'le monde selon Monsanto' which arrived this week but so far we have not had time to watch it. I would anyway never ever buy any Monsanto product knowing those people were the producers of the orange agent largely used in Viet-Nam and which effects are still active both on land and people.
Yeah. It is really difficult to think of a positive use for terminator tech. I have read arguments on both sides & Monsanto do make the point that cross-pollination with native species has not been widely demonstrated. At least by definition, terminator genes cannot be spread that way. It worries me nonetheless. It might be the superstitious fear of the ignorant, but my instincts say terminator genes are a bad idea & things may go wrong in ways we don't expect.
It amazes me is that farmers in places like Mexico can be forced to compensate seed companies after unwitting & unwanted contamination of their crops by GM strains. As far as I can tell, Free Trade Agreements are as much part of the problem as anything else. They are used to bully poor farmers basically.
