Saving this article for next time but I hope there isn't a next time! Hehe, we planted 6 palms on May 3rd, five 15 gallon and one 20 gallon. From reading your articles I believe they are not your favorite species but we live in a marginal climate and they seem to do well here with care.

I wanted to separate the roots but Kent said 'leave them alone!' Now I am so glad we did. We did dig good size holes and replaced the soil with 'good stuff'. Also, following the nursery's suggestion we put slow release fertilizer 1/2 way down the holes after the trees were placed in them and back-filled half way. We have pretty sandy soil here. Oops, I hope good fortune will be kind to us & the trees.

I read somewhere on the web not to cut the damaged or even dead fronds off because they help to protect the young fronds. We have a few damaged and broken fronds because of our very high winds the last few days and just a couple yellowed fronds. If you have time I'd like to know what you know about leaving or removing the fronds. On even the smallest palm we planted removing them would leave at least 6 big fronds with a couple of new fronds growing.

Thank you for all your palm articles. I've saved them all and reference them often.

I'm just getting around to reading my backlog of articles, and I really enjoyed this one. I will probably never live in a climate that I can grow these plants outdoors, but I love to read your articles and dream.
