Thank you for this good article.

But, your geography needs a little help. Flanders is not a county. It is a region of the country of Belgium. It encompasses 60 % of Belgium and is situated from the North Sea to about Brussels. It has five provinces (= states) and even more numerous counties. Some of the better know cities in Flanders are Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, and even Brussels is geographically part of Flanders.

The poppy fields, where most of the brutal fighting went on during WW I are situated in the area around Ieper (Ypres) which is situated in the Northwestern part of Flanders (close to the French border).

It also needs to be said that many Flemish soldiers died there due to not understanding the orders. At that time, the Flemish (from Flanders) were the peasants and the Walloons (from Wallonie, the French speaking part of Belgium) were the upper class. In the army, only the Walloons had a chance at being in leading positions. They gave their orders to the Flemish in French, who did not understand these and many did the opposite of what they were ordered and ran into the fire of the enemy... This is one of the reasons why the Flemish still resent the Walloons...
