| More usually, Kittiwakes nest on sea cliffs, but this colony has taken to nesting on riverside buildings in a city (Newcastle upon Tyne) 15km inland, the furthest-inland Kittiwake colony in the world. Because they're on buildings, it's possible to get really close to them, and take some very unusual pics . . . this is looking down from the bridge at the nests, and down to the riverside road with cars, buses and people straight below them . . . don't look too close if you get vertigo!!

Geez, Rose, you sure have a ton of different birds on your farm. Lucky you. Thanks for sharing the wonderful pictures with us.
Impending storms here today (hopefully nothing like you folks have been experiencing), and the birds are flitting about. Too fast for a good picture.
Gotta go and plant some Hollyhocks before the storm gets here.

How nice it was to see them somewhere other than the feeder at my families home in Roseburg. These were at Herbert's Pond, near Canyonville. When the trees were bare of leaves I saw (previous seasons) oriole nests all over the place, so was very hopeful of finding them there. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Tigerlily and Rose, your birds amaze me. Really great shots.
The baby starling disappeared. I was still trying to decide what to do when I didn't hear it anymore and went to investigate. Couldn't find it. Either it left, was hidden really well and not crying anymore or something carried it off. Nature ran its course.

Funny story...I have been trying to teach DH the different birds as I learn them... and he does try. He gets more excited over some than others..like the Pileated. We have covered towhee's several times now that they come in the yard.
Last Night the bird below landed on top of our little 6ft. river birch...he is sitting on the porch watching it and I came out the door. He says to me "that's a towhee, right?" I just about lost it!! LOL

| I apologize for taking up so much space on the forum, but today while I was working I heard the most gosh-awful bird sound. It was a very loud grating screech. I looked around and saw a mama European Starling and her baby. The baby, as large as mama, kept following her around screaming for her to pick something up and feed it. So here we go with the series. She finally brought the loud thing to the feeder.

| I would have fretted over those waxwings, too. I'm glad to hear that's normal. I recently had a starling visit with a broken leg. I felt sad for him. Many large shadows were flying over my house. I don't know if he made it, but it is possible; he was very good at hiding.
Angele, that pic is fantastic. I love the motion and drama. |

Moogletree, don't worry, I will take good care of them for you. They have built a nest on the lake and seem to love it here. |

| We spent the weekend at our new hunting lease, and there were two neighbors nesting on the front porches of a pair of side by side mobile homes we use for cabins.
One was a Curve Billed Thrasher. Sometimes you could see the nestlings little heads popping up when mama came in to feed them, but I didn't get a picture.

| I'm really happy to see and hear catbirds in my yard this year as in previous year's they have been only occasional visitors. This one put on a pretty decent performance from the neighbor's cherry tree this morning. Yesterday afternoon one of them seemed to be much more insistent on claiming its territory. | I emptied my point and shoot camera and was pleased to find a picture of the Red-breasted grosbeak couple. They've since left me, as have most of all my regulars! Odd. I guess they are all nesting somewhere.
Nuthatches, downies, goldfinches… gone.
Still have my house finches, the cardinal pair, lots of house sparrows and house wrens. Oh, and today a big fat mouse under the feeder. sigh.

The House Martins at the neighbour's have finished the outside of the nest but were both in an out today so must be lining it. | I just love everyone's pictures. Pelle, I don't know how you take those in-flight photos! I tried to get one. He looks a million miles away b/c I didn't have the zoom out, but if I had, he would have been passing too fast for me to even find him.
I thought of you Angele feeding your roadrunner b/c everytime I see this hawk, I want to stick a steak up on a pole. The poor guy is missing so many feathers from little birds attacking him that I don't know how he stays up there. Click the image for an enlarged view.
