| I downloaded the free version of AVG a couple of weeks ago and since then have had some screen freeze problems. I did not understand this at first and thought that the program was causing some problems with my computer. Well I did some looking at the new program that was downloaded and noticed a links checker.
What ??????????????
Well I have noticed of late that any time I do a goggle search that I have whirlies next to each link that end up with a green star and a check mark. Duh turns out that link checker scopes out any links that are on a page to see if they lead to web sites that aren't safe and gives you an OK rating, a warning, or flat out blocks the site altogether. How cool is that! This is the cause of my freeze ups, probably because I'm still in the stone age dial up. :) |

| Snipe,
I have been running AVG for almost 2 years now--and now I am getting this Update to 8.0 window every time I first go to any page--like DG.
It is saying that after 5/31 there will be no more updates available for my current 7.75 (?) version. When I clicked on "more Information"--seems there will be a steep fee (at this time anyway) to upgrade to the 8.0. --like $54.99.
Did you upload a FREE version of the 8.0? Or--was it a lesser one?
IS THERE a free version for this 8.0 upgrade????? Sure would like to have it!
Gita
Here's the window I am getting all the time.

Note the price in the lower left-hand corner!
Has anyone else gotten this?
If anyone can track down a truly free download to this 8.0 upgrade--please post it here.
Thanks, Gita Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Jo,
I have not yet upgraded...need to wait for my SIL to come over here and do it. I do not have the Tech. confidence to tackle installing something new.
I have also worked for about 25 years in garden-related jobs. Landscape crew--for a grower taking care of 5 greenhouses of houseplants--Then for a chain store, in charge of the houseplant Dept.--In a small plant/flower shop--and now, 10 years at a Home Depot. The first 5 I was in charge of the WHOLE Greenhouse-full of plants. This also included Pond supplies. In the last 5 years, due to bad knees and a lot of related surgeries, I have been working in the Phone Center as an Operator.
My hear still belongs to garden, though!
Washington and Oregon have the BEST weather for gardening--and--the most beautiful gardens! Been there several times--as my In-Laws live there and also my youngest Daughter--going on 8 years now. She lives in Seattle. Don't know how far that is from Richland. She owns a Natural Pet Care store called "Four Legs Good" in the Wallingford N. section of Seattle.

Read the post about AVG 8, and wondered if the freezes were the same thing I get, but know what they are now..it' s when updates are taking place or scan is operating...things get a little sticky.
But my question is: What is an Epi? It's gorgeous! Do they only come in red? Will they grow in No. Calif.?

An Epi is short for Epiphylum. I thought almost everyone in CA knows about it. That is where I got my original cuttings from. Epiphylums are plants the grpw up in the crotches of trees and do not need soil. Orchids are ALL epiphylums...
It is a member of the Orchid Cactus family. If you go to the "Orchid cactus" Forum--you will see your fill of these. That is a very large group of plants and has all kinds of varieties and colors.
My area is not a year round outside one for the Epis. I have to bring them in for the winter. |

Not true at all. Some are lithophytes (growing on rocks). And, almost all temperate orchids are terrestrial.
Epiphyllum is a genus of 19 species of ephiphytic plants in the family Cactaceae (cactus). That's only a very small portion of the number of orchids. There are thousands of orchid species.
Just pointing it out because of the emphasis you put on the word "ALL". Be careful with "blanket" statements such as "ALL" (especially capitalized, giving emphasis). They rarely hold true. =)

| Well DG is getting a little slow in its old age I just got the update this morning that there were new posts!
The freeze frame is from the link checker. I disabled mine due to it slowing things down to much. Makes the AVG icon unhappy though.
I have also noticed that my computer has gotten a little jerky and wondered if it was due to AVG or something else, thanks for the heads up on the MS patch, I'll check with my computer guru and see if he has noticed it as well.
Here is the link provided to me which is idiot proof for the mediocre computer users such as myself. :)

Where it says recommended download click on the link just below it that says Download.
It will take you to a second page and just hit download now button. It will walk you through from there. Be warned its a large file for those of you who are still on dial up.
I sometimes think they use us freebie junkies as their crash test dummies for new programs so they can work out the kinks before they give them to people who actually pay for their services! :)

| I have to give permission to scratch my nose. Firefox checks sites before I even go there to see if its safe, they have blocked me more than once due to an unsafe site or at the least they warn me first. gmail scans my email before it is opened for viruses and so does avg. And last but not least firefox is ten times user friendlier than IE7.In the last 3 years with this system I must have visited more than 10 thousand sites and not once had my computer attacked or hacked, but I find all kinds of trash in my virus vault along with Trojans and what not and those are the ones that are good enough to slip through the first line of defenses that require nothing in the way of effort from me.
I have a father in law who has to take his computer in regularly due to these things and refuses to use defender, avg and firefox, he sends me emails that are forwarded to him all the time that gmail and avg have a fit about with enough warnings to choke a horse. |

A properly configured firewall isn't intrusive to one's surfing.

The AVG email scanner is a redundant waste of resources. If you're running the resident scanner, there's no need for the email scanner.

If you're running Windows (any flavor), and you're not behind a router, and you're on a highspeed connection, you really should be behind a firewall. Windows has open ports by default. You don't need to be surfing websites for someone to be able to access your insecure machine.
It's quite comparable to Russian Roulette.

| Most people are under the false impression that a firewall will keep viruses out of their computer when the use of a firewall is to keep people from retrieving data from the machine.
The firewall will allow "spy" etc programs to enter the machine but it will prevent those programs from sending data out without permission and the settings can be tricky to allow the data you need a program to access without unwanted data retrieval
The best bet is to not store sensitive data on your machine in the first place. This becomes more difficult as more services are accessed "on line". IE. banking, bill payment etc.
The simple fact of the matter is that if you can do it on line - someone can figure out how to see it. Sooner or latter, every block is undone (copyrights, security etc). Then they make a new one, and then someone nails that block. And it really is an endless loop.

| Well my biggest question is why even have to mess with a firewall? As I said I use firefox and gmail both of which belong to google who has done a very good job of watching what goes on and blocks I don't know how much before it even gets to me, google is after all bigger than MS. Google is in the advertisement business not the programs business so they take care of their costumers without looking to sell them programs. Google makes their systems user friendly because the larger their costumer base the more advertising they get. They don't shove the advertising down you throat either it is always discreet unlike all of the other platforms you use, especially on the email accounts. Their tool bars are easy to understand and to use.
As I said 3 years and no attacks no matter how much I play or where I go because firefox and gmail go there before I do and check it out first and I don't have to worry about it. Add to that avg and windows defender and what little google misses they catch.
The number one lesson I have learned is don't give out your info on the net to anyone which is the number one mistake people make. Don't open emails from people you don't know and if you do avg asks if you want them to look at it first, so if you want double redundancy of gmail checking it and then avg whats wrong with that? You already know that attacks come in the form of attachments and website links.
It has been my experience that firefox and gmail work hand in hand with each other ln doing a good job of watching what goes on in the way of what you receive in emails that are the number one way in which your computer is attacked. When it comes to websites firefox uses spiders to keep track of those and identifies bad sites and lists them in their main frame so it knows about them long before you ever go to visit them, ie7 and MS don't do that, your on your own baby, which is why they use firewalls, google spiders never sleep. If I am ever curious which is rarely I can go to google analytics and see whats new in the way of places not to go.
So why configure anything, why have to set up anything that to me is not user friendly, and if you get it wrong well thats your fault not theirs. I like having 24/7 computer geeks who do those things for me especially since they are being paid to do nothing but play games with the folks who like being malicious with computers. Instead of waiting for MS to identify and then send out patches to correct for what computer hacks do I prefer someone who is there and doing something about it as soon as a hacker or virus is identified, so long as they continue to do just that I will stick with google.
As well hackers aren't near the threat that tv has made them out to be. Its the viruses that have to be watched out for and those are simple to avoid with a little protection. I learned a great deal about hackers and what they can and can't do at a hackers website. Very enlightening.

I have always used a firewall on all three of our computers at home but when we moved we had to replace our Wireless router and reset up a network. The thing would not work so we called their tech number and were told to turn off our firewalls. When we did that it worked fine. Is this because the new routers are equiped with their own firewalls or are we wide open even though we are showing as being a secure network with a password required to access? |

| Most routers have a built-in firewall, yes. You should be able to access its settings from your browser. Just type in the address of the router (ie: 192.168.0.1) in the Address bar, and you should be prompted by a login box. The router's documentation should have all of the info.
It may be that your software firewall was blocking access to the router. Disabling it was the easiest way for the router tech to allow access. Your having a software firewall was of no concern to him. His job was just to get you connected via the router, period. It's worth checking if your router has a built-in firewall (and learn how to configure it). There's no sense in having a firewall if you leave it wide open. =)

Anyone who wants to see anything on my network is welcome to pull up in front of the driveway with a wireless card and try (getting through the network settings may take you awhile but if you are out there long enough for me to spot you, I may come out and give you a hand, in the interest of saving you from wasting time).
