I want a raised bed for roses and several raised beds for cutting flowers. My son and a friend are going to build them this summer. Of course it is too hot to plant anything now so that gives me a year to build on the lasagna bed. We have lots of cattle so manure is already decomposing and I drink enough coffee to support Starbucks(LOL).

This is verrrry exciting and thank you so much on how to go about this project.

I'm so excited! I just killed myself digging out clay soil for a tiny raised bed.
I guess it's time to start collecting paper for next years new garden.
Thank you!!

My brother has a piece of equipment that digs up dirt and hauls it off...since I am building raised beds, do I need to get him to take a foot of soil off the top before I build the raised beds? Thanks

Gail, I should have added that if by any chance that soil was contaminated (toxic waste) probably removing a foot wouldn't be enough anyway.

No, this is just good ole' blackland farming land with a lot of clay. No one has even lived out here for at least 25 years in this house. I just mow weeds...don't even have grass and don't want any St. Augustine to take care of. I just want lots of raised beds for cutting flowers and a big giant rose bed.

When I lived in New Braunfels in zone 8, the landscaper did take the top 12" inches of dirt out for a mammoth sized cutting garden. Since I wanted an instant garden, he used lot of bone meal and blood meal and mixed with really good topsoil. That was the prettiest yard I ever had. I didn't fertilize for 4 years and still had the prettiest flowers in town. (That soil was really hot the first year)
