Thanks for the great tips and pictures on layering. I'll have lots more thyme soon. What do you think about using pie pans filled with soil mix for some of the lower growing varieties?

I'm assuming you mean tin pans so you can punch holes for drainage... and it should work, but you'll get better root systems in a container that's 4 to 6 inches deep (like a windowbox planter or one of those round bowl shaped planters pictured with the Rose Petal Thyme in the article)... you'll be amazed at how that 2 inch tall thyme will develop a 4 inch deep mass of roots!

If you use the pie tin for layering, I'd suggest separating sprigs after rooting (maybe clip the rooted stems apart, let the roots continue developing for another week or two, then separate and pot up) and potting them up in 2 inch pots. That way, they'll have nice rootballs when you plant them out.
