| We just came from here ... [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
Excellent photos everyone on the previous thread !!! I'll begin the new thread with a photo taken last weekend of a nesting Killdeer. A week earlier, I accidentally found the nest only because I saw the Killdeer performing her injured act, as I pulled into a parking lot. Seeing the fragility of the nesting site, I alerted the park rangers so they could place orange cones around the nesting site. A stone parking lot seems to be a favorite nesting site for the Killdeer. Click the image for an enlarged view.

So heartwarmed over all the pictures in the last thread everyone! By the time I was done typing the following the new thread was started so I’m cutting and pasting!

heehee GM, I can't get the birds to help me with the chores one little bit! What's your secret?? just teasing of course :-)
Jane.. those are the cutest pictures ever! (baby quail)
Nice photos Janet! The nests birds make are just amazing!!
Pelle, lovely flight photo! I've given up on trying to get them. Interesting HF; wonder if the boys will find her mysterious & sexy!
Elphaba... I thought that was a wing pattern. Poor thing! And those Dove nests, amazing they have any success. Pitiful building if you can even call it building. I was feeling sorry for Rudi too. Day before yesterday she started bringing 2 babies to feed not 1. I'm in trouble now, I'll never have enough meat scraps for 4 roadrunners, yikes.

| linthicum, beautiful photos, as usual.
The Savannah Sparrows use the fence around the back side of Anchorage International Airport, to perch on. This evening I drover alone the road, on the out side of the fence, looking for them. I saw lots of sparrows, but most wouldn't let me close enough for a picture. This bird was the exception. I finally got some good closeup pictures. But, I had to shoot this picture though the chain link fence.

All of these are just gorgeous. Can't believe now you've made a COWBIRD look good. Just lovely.
I remember a thread somewhere about a bluejay or thrasher (can't remember) displaying that same activity with the wings on the ground. Don't remember the conclusion of that discussion either. But you're right, someone will know about all of this stuff.

It is interesting finding out bird behaviour, and done so by watching them to take pics! I have seen the pair of Goldfinches the last couple of days flying together quite low, and rising every now and then as if in unison, quite a show to watch. I guess they are catching insects for their young.

Spelling. One is "d-o-v-e", the orther is "p-i-g-e-o-n". Otherwise, 'dove' tends to be used for smaller species, and 'pigeon' for larger species, but no hard-and-fast rule.

Thanks!
Not a Downy, it doesn't have the white upper back, being strongly barred there instead. I'm thinking the best fit is an immature (one year old) female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, but I'm not 100% sure as even at one year old it ought really to have got a red crown. Three-toed was another thought, but there's too much white on the head for that.

Far from the first time I've been stumped! Fortunately (for the sanity of the record books!) Red-cockaded can be excluded as that has a large white cheek. But it does look frighteningly like a Nuttall's (California only), though I think I can just see a black upper breast band on the mystery bird (which Y-b Sapsucker has, but Nuttall's doesn't), and one can also just see the white secondary covert bar of Y-bS too.

I'm thoroughly enjoying everyones pix. I thought I had a great (sunny but windy) day yesterday with the Bullocks Orioles, and took a few hundred images. Later I discovered that nearly all were fuzzy, and was quite disappointed. Darn wind. They are such gorgeous birds.

| Resin etal...yes it was interesting to watch this battle. The Osprey and a pair of Great Blue Heron have nests nearby so they don't want this Eagle in the area.
Tigerlily...it would be my pleasure to show you around if you ever got done here, but Murphy's law would probably kick in and all the birds would go on vacation somewhere else...I'm jealous of all the Warblers you see. |

adel, I may hold you to that one day! Not too worry, I already know Murphy quite well. ;-)
The warblers have moved on, I think. I saw them mostly at the willow thicket down at the creek. In April they were just everywhere there was water. You can bet I'll be waiting for them next year. Since the creek rehab began, I've seen at least 25 bird species I hadn't seen here before.

| Mrs_Ed, early in this thread you asked to see a photo of the Killdeer nest surrounded by the orange cones. I did go back today and she is still sitting on the nest. The eggs have been in the nest for at least 14 days. It normally takes 24 to 28 days of incubating for the chicks to hatch. I probably won't follow-up on the progress since the chicks usually leave the nest right after birth.

| Mrs_Ed, I often find them nesting among the parking lot stones. I assume it is a camouflage instinct because it is awful difficult to initially see them unless they move. And, of course, the eggs look like stones, also.
Janet, you need three hands, or in this case, software that allows you to add "stuff", like with the attached photo.
Today, I saw my First-of-the-Year (FOY), first year 'Orchard Oriole' singing high up in the power line towers. I find it simply amazing how they can change from this color to that of the adult male Orchard Oriole. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Actually, all birds, and most mammals (watch a dog or cat or cow licking it's back!) can, it's humans who are unusual in having inflexible necks. All birds can also of course reach their preen gland, just above the tail. Owls can do even more, close to 270° (three-quarter turn) if I remember rightly.

| I was in the backyard with my granddaughter yesterday afternoon. She was swimming in the pint size pool, having a grand time. I was taking videos of her playing in the pool. Suddenly she looked up at me and said, "Maw Maw, do you hear that song?" I looked up on the power line and saw this fella singing his song. I explained to her that the Mockingbird is our state bird and told her how he sings many songs. She said, "Take some pictures of him singing Maw Maw." So I did.

| Hi dellrose, this is a delayed response to your post about the Eastern Bluebird. The Bluebird sprawled on the ground appears to be sunbathing. We observe it frequently, particularly in magpies and wattlebirds. The birds tend to choose the hottest part of ground at the hottest part of the day, spread their wings, fluff up the feathers on their bodies and go into an almost trance-like state, with head tilted slightly sideways, exposing their preen gland to the sun. If indeed this is what you observed your would probably have seen the bird get up after five minutes or so, with beak open and panting before returning to "normal". Or I could be talking through my hat.
Fantastic images and an insight into unfamiliar birds. Thanks everyone. |
