I live in so fl and my balcony gets morning and afternoon sunshine. Whenever I get plants, they die one me:( I want to get plants that bloom with color. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Have you tried talking to one of the Master Gardeners in Palm Beach County? I'm almost sure they would know what the best types of plants are for your area and have some good ideas for you to try.
I found this information on the internet - hope it helps.
I live on he 5th floor of an apartment building in northern Ohio. This is my first year growing plants in containers. So far, so good. I have pansies, which are almost done for this year. I plan to replace them with mums which will bloom later one. I have two hanging baskets of petunias, which are doing beautifully, despite the wind. I have one big square pot planted with geraniums, basil, and a couple herbs. It is doing very well.
I put one put of variegated geraniums in a bird bath, but it isn't going to last much longer. It can't take the heat.
I use Miracle Grow spikes once a month. I have discovered that plants in pots need watered every day. I use a water meter and check the pots every morning.
I love my little garden on the balcony. I moved from 3 acres, filled with perennials, and gardening had become overwhelming for me. This little balcony takes me about 45 minutes per day and I don't get hot or dirty !
I hope you like your little garden too. In Florida, I am sure you will have many more options, since the weather doesn't get so cold.
Here is a another picture. By the way, I got a lot of help from the folks on Container Gardening and Perennials. I thought maybe I could grow perennials, but in the end, here in zone 5, I decided to stick with annuals.
Oh - I guess I write, one thought at a time - LOL ! I meant to add that we also have two bird feeders on the balcony. One is low for mourning doves and small sparrows, and the other is high for finches. I didn't fill my balcony with plants, because the birds need space, and I need a little room to walk to tend to the plants and feeders.
I love the feeders. One is in front of my kitchen window, so I see it alot. The other is in front of the balcony doors, so I can sit and watch tv and see the birds and the pretty flowers.
Hi countrymom,
Where did you get that interesting plant stand? The one in your photo that you hung baskets from? Would love one of them.
Thanks,
