I went into the store the other day, planning to buy one, but waiting for some cash to come in. (those monthly paychecks!!!)

I was mesmerized. I haven't ever had the faintest inclination to call any gadget, including automobiles or flying machines-ha- beautiful. But I wanted to stand and stare at the Mac. And the man pointed to the tiny, sleek "laptop",,, "it's NOT a laptop", he said gently. No, I never ever carry my computer anywhere.

So, tell me, how much of a learning curve am I looking at? I've had nothing but one Dell laptop after another since 1999, at my dear, only, brother's insistance. I'll not tell him I've gotten a Mac, he'll just explode like a bomb, BOOM! and there'll be a big puff of smoke where he used to be. He internalizes his emotions. H's my dear only sibling, and I hate to displease the bossy fellow, ha! But he lives far away, and doesn't visit, he dislikes where I live, and I cant say much for his choice of homes, but that's neither here nor there.

So, I'll be frequenting this forum beginning now. Who has made The Switch, and what advice, other than heaps of excited praise, do you have??

Thanks in advance,

Welcome to the world of Mac. They are very friendly, intuitive machines. Read the operator's manual and just start playing with it. Like anything else that's new to you, it will take a little time to get used to it. Mac's operating system is not complicated, just different. If you know how to use a PC already you should do just fine. Ask questions on the computer forum if you get stuck. There's Mac users on there. There are lots of Mac forums on the web also. Ask away.
Good luck and congrats.

I've got a couple of Dells (desk tops) and am basically pleased with them, but lately I've been thinking about trying Mac, not as a replacement but as a complement or alternative use. I wonder if this makes me certifiably insane.

If you had several Toyotas and decided you wanted a Volvo, also, would that be nuts?

HA! I have a couple of Toyota's, (not several) the one I use gets 43 MPG with a conventional Internal combustion engine (non-hybrid). When I see a Volvo that will do that I will trade up.

You will learn the Mac in no time. A week or less I'd say. Once you see how much more user friendly it is, how more secure it is, etc, you'll never want to go back. I ditched Windows 9 years ago and never looked back.

Let your brother explode! He'll get over it.

Dyson,

The Volvo C30 "Efficiency" model, with a turbo diesel gets 52 mpg. =P

Too bad Volvos are SO ugly. =)

Volvos, you have to keep them forever, too!

I'll get some sort of sticker to cover the Apple logo, should the brother ever visit and see the beast- he won't know what it is! The dear man cannot see very well, and he doesn't seem to notice things that are obvious to me. Puzzles me sometimes.

I went Mac about a year ago and I havent gone back. I am very happy especially because of all the problems ive heard about Vista. Mac OSX is just a more easy to use OS. My brother flipped when I told hi i got one because he is a big PC guy. Then when his wife tried my Macbook and when she said she wanted one he forbid her to get a Mac saying he wont help her with her computer problems.

I guess that's why I'm single. "forbid"? I've even heard men use that word on their wives.

Some things, yes, sell the children, go round with other men. But a computer?

I didn't find it difficult to, after using Macs for over a decade, to change to a Sony VAIO.

philomel...someone gave me the Sony VAIO . Then the video card on the iMac I had froze the cursor. There was a big to-do on the problem and if Apple would address it. As I needed more RAM anyways, an upgrade was pricey and I didn't have time (or the money) to deal with whatever the problem with a frozen mouse was, I put it aside. That was the first problem I ever had on a Mac. Before that, I wore out the letters on a PowerMac keyboard and got it all gunked up behind the keys with spilled food. When I went to a Mac dealer to get a new one, the guy said "they really overbuilt these things". And they did. In 7 years, I never had a hardware or software problem. Took a while to get used to Windows. Very clunky looking compared to the screen of a Apple computer. My sister just got a MacBook Pro. Elegant design and a lot of power under that slick case.

Got a Mac to begin with because my sister had used Macs for a decade before I decided to buy a computer. In 1998 I was talking to her about a Windows machine. One day I was outside under my truck changing the oil when UPS came. A new PowerMac! She was afraid I was about to sell my soul to Bill Gates. Took me a half an hour to unpack Mac, turn it on and get on AOL. That was my first computer and first time getting on line. For ease of use by newbies like me back then, Apple computers left Windows in the dust.

Thanks very much for your answer David. I had a desk top PC for 7 years which too never gave any trouble until its 'power in' blew. As it was elderly and I needed to update a friend retrieved the hard disc for me and I got a Dell lap top.
Last week that overheated and glued its graphics card to the motherboard. Fortunately I had taken out an onsite warranty and had the screen and motherboard replaced at no further cost. However the battery has given out despite being not even 2 years old.

I'm attracted to the Mac system for its simplicity and have had them recommended by a number of people. I'm planning to get a MacBook Pro, like your sister LOL. I love photography, so am looking forward to the elegant screen :)

The Mac is ideal for storing and organizing your photos. If your camera uses SD cards, there is an SD card slot built in to the MacBook Pro for really fast and easy downloading. The iPhoto program, and several others, come with the Macbook so there is no need to buy any additional software.

I worked for several years professionally on Microsoft applications, but once I tried the Mac world there was no going back. I am 100% Mac now, and regret the time and money I wasted trying to get Windows to work for my lifestyle. My Macs do everything I want (Music, photos, TV, Radio, etc) and have been a troublefree joy to own.
