I have heavy clay soil, the backyard was a parking area for a former potato chip factory[ now our home],with everything in the soil you can think of. For years my husband insisted black plastic was the "cure" for weeds. I tried to tell him, they still grew under the black plastic, they just didn't come up through it. Finally last yr.& this yr.I have been allowed to do it my way. I have added top soil, compost & planting soil to the entire bed. When I first planted peppers they stayed the SAME SIZE,they just matured & put out a pepper or two. My soil is better now, although last yr. the corn was 1/2 sized & yellow ALL the time no matter how much we fertilized. This yr. it looks pretty good. I am going to do lasagna beds when everything is done for the season since its fully planted & growing well,& leave it that way all winter. The soil here was the WORST I have ever heard of...& is quite a challange.
Good for you! (and good luck with new beds) You should have a soil sample analyzed by your Extension Service if the yellowing continues. You might need some adjustments to the fertilizer...
