| Time for the next thread! Wow, I can't believe we're on volume 115. There sure are some prolific photographers on this forum! Here's where we came from: [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
Today I really enjoyed watching the birdbath and fountain. It was very hot out, in the upper 90's and the birds were very appreciative when I went out to put some water in the bath.
Mrs. P. Bunting made an appearance shortly after I filled the bath, but unfortunately her husband never showed.

| I'm a day late for the "swallow thread", but there were THOUSANDS of swallows at Lake Spenard - Hood Lake portion of Anchorage Int. Airport this evening, (Monday my time). I had never seen so many swallows, at one time, before! Mostly Bank Swallow, a good portion of Tree Swallows, very few Cliff Swallows. Violet-green Swallows were missing, even-though they are the most common near my house.
This is a new species for the "swallow thread", a Bank Swallow.

Wonder how intelligent that crow is?? Was it trying to tempt the Osprey away from the nest, so it could get in to grab a chick? Somehow, I suspect that's beyond crow intelligence, despite how clever they are.

I enjoyed following mated pairs of birds, and their nests, over a whole nesting cycle, watching the changes and seeing how quickly the chicks grew, and how the mated pairs behaved toward each other and toward the chicks as they grew. |

When they moult into adult plumage. With Red-tailed Hawks, that's at about one year old, so in a month or two from now. Other species may take different times, some small birds get their adult plumage at only a couple of months old, while some seabirds can take 4-5 years or even longer.

| Thanks Resin. I was pretty sure it had something to do with plummege, just wasn't sure of the ages. Interesting that sea-birds may take that long! Thanks! |

| Thanks Pelle, It was interesting , he stayed for quite a while. I was sitting close to the pond, when he came in. Which surprised me. He usually don't stick around, when I'm out there. Earlier in the day, I saw him gathering cobwebs, for nesting. Unfortunately not nesting in my yard. He flew toward the other Ave. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Been busy building an ark!

| Marilyn,
I believe the spelling you are looking for is mosquito, unless you want the Latin, Anopheles (species varies).
They are coming out here in Iowa too, especially with all our recent rain. My phoebe seems to be struggling to keep up with them!

| CMoxon,
LOL! That's it! :-) Thanks for the correct spelling!
I couldn't think of the correct spelling, because it's probably the unseasonably high heat we're having! It was 90 yesterday, 92 today and most of the upcoming week is suppose to be 90+. :-(
Our avg. high is 79/80 right now and 87 is the avg. high we get in the middle of July!
