Do you think any of these would be a good candidate for growing up a slope? I have ivy there but I have a large bare spot that's worrying me...

On a slope - can you tell me more - soil, sun, and water, for that area.

It is a west facing steep slope, mostly sunny. Soil is alkaline, mostly sandy I think. I have sprinklers for the area, but I prefer something that would save me on the water bill!

The english ivy is doing a good job at retaining this slope, but as I said I have a bare spot that I'm concerned with. I'm not really a fan of ivy (this was there before I moved in), so I'm looking for prettier alternatives. I really like the look of Boston Ivy, but I'm not sure if their "suction cups" would attach to bare soil/other ivies as they can attach to flat surfaces...
    What do you think?

I am not a huge fan of Ivy myself, have you thought of a low growing yew or juniper for the area?

Mitch, the area is pretty steep and it's difficult to get up there and plant anything. I was thinking more of a climber that I could plant a the base and let it go up by itself...I don't know why I can't post a picture over here for you to see...

Have you thought about a jasmine?

I just put in some Vinca major in my parents' yard... it'll send out 6 foot runners that root and then run again, but it doesn't climb structures the way ivy does. It blooms, too, although not with the fragrance of jasmine! :-)

Carolina Jessamine is a beautiful vine for cascading down a slope. Typically to save on maintenance work it would be better to start at the top of the hill and let it cascade down. many vines will work this way.
