I am thinking of putting larkspur into my garden--it is an old fashioned cottage style garden--I have read the facts, but I am wondering if anyone has ever had any experience with them. The tag at the store doesn't always tell you everything you need to know!
I have tried growing it and out of 12 seedlings, only three have made it. I tried the link above but it doesn't work. Lin could you please repost? I would love to read it. Thanks!
I've grown larkspurs before in a part shade location. They didn't get very tall, but I think that's because I didn't plant them out of their six packs until late in the season. They did ok in clay soil, which was pretty low in nutrients (I didn't fertilize, poor things.) They also self seed, a nice bonus. Cram them together for the cottage garden look. Good Luck, they're beautiful!
AmyDawn . . . don't want to hijack your thread, but could you post pictures of your cottage style garden? (Or Dmail some to me?) That is what I have decided I am working toward in my front yard . . . I'd love to see what you have done! (I know we are in different zones, but I'd love to see how you have yours laid out in relation to your house, etc.)
Sure--but keep in mind it is a work in progress and I am still developing it.
Also keep in mind all I have is a pair of binoculars that takes pics--I don't have a regular digital camera and so I can' get pics all together. Use your imagination and I am going to post them left to right.
The far left is are a yellow and white clematis I planted together that I am going to place daisies in front of after they begin to grow a little more (they are new additions this year). Right beside them is a java red wegelia shrub.
Feel free to offer advice or tell me if I did something wrong!
Next is Jacob Cline monarda, wiht a purple coneflower in front of it. Following that are double red and white hollyhocks with lupines in front of them. I am going to round this out and put some 18-24 inch mounding perennials in front of them. Any Ideas?
This is the other end of the hollyhocks, but now they have asters in front if them. I am going to do the same thing here--continue the curve and layer something else in front of these as well.
This area is new this year--there was a lilac bush here that died last year. There is a baby hollyhock in the back, and I did plant the larkspur behind the sage plant you see. THat is loosestrife in front of it, and another new clematis growing up my porch rail.
Different angle on that corner--sorry all of these pics are so fuzzy. There are also some snapdragons mixed in right there--that is the yellow you can see. From there, the garden is a border in front of my porch--a mixture of daylilies, more snapdragons, and geraniums.
Again, I am sorry the pics are so fuzzy. I don't like using those binoculars--I am not that good with them.
On the other hand, my birthday is in August. Can any one gues what I am going to ask for???
Well, the pics are a little fuzzy but I get the idea. I hope the birthday fairy brings you that camera! I just like reading all the different flower names . . . now I get to look them up and see if any will work in my zone. Thanks!
