Earlier this spring I invented my own garlic-pepper spray to deter critters from munching on the tulips that were growing under the peonies. The combination of peppers I used had a bizarre effect on the stems of the tulips, peonies, roses, garden phlox, and other perennials, in that it made all the stems twist and turn like corkscrews. It didn't prevent the peonies from flowering, but the effect reminded me of the gnarled branches of ancient bonsai plants. So when yesterday's forecast announced that rain was on the way, I went outside and cut a few of the peonies with the most unusual stems to put in an Asian inspired vase. I combined them with some baby bamboo stalks that I cut from a nearby grove last night, to make this arrangement.
