I was forced (by myself I suppose) to give up my worm bin, which was a great composting project for a few years, when the neighborhood rats decided vegetables were tasty. I turned to trench composting (i.e., digging a hole, tossing in a bucket of vegetable and fruit peels, etc.) and went on my way. The rodents seem disinterested. With the exception of unexpected sproutings, it has been great, the worms are thrilled and seem to be recruited by each new feast. The only problem is remembering -- every once in awhile I dig a hole for a plant and up pops a watermelon rind, but that is entertaining in its own way too.

I just discovered that my compost isn't hot enough to kill canteloupe seeds. LOL I spread a nice thick layer of compost over a new bed, and in a week I had dozens upon dozens of melon vines sprouting. I was tempted to let them grow, but I know they wouldn't have time to produce fruit before frost, and had other plans for that bed.
