Be careful ordering from White Flower Farm if you have a peony color scheme. The plants they mail to you are sound but they seem to be mailing whatever they like.
You may recall that in the fall of 2000 they made an extraordinary offer, or so it seemed (I still have the catalogue). The had a bumper crop of Festiva Maximas and offered three for the price of one. It's my favorite peony, and I installed them in a triangle. One bloomed the following spring - Festiva Maxima. The next one bloomed the following spring, and was all white. The third had red buds. They turned out to be Ann Cousins (beautiful but a notoriously flopper I would not have chosen) and the other Kansas - bright RED!!! - not my favorite. I know this because I called then and asked them to please identify what they sent. I had really wanted the impact of 3, but said that I would keep them. Who wants to pull up a perfectly healthy peony that took 2-3 years to bloom? It appears to be Vivid Rose, which is in the catalogue and has been the last couple of years - a color I'm indifferent to. So out of six peonies I ordered from them, three are the wrong color. If I had wanted those I would have ordered them. I ordered Tourangelle, Mrs. FDR, Cornelia Shaylor and Moonstone, thank goodness from other companies. As you can gather, I wanted all white and soft pink. I now have a red and strong pink.
I would simply add to my WFF review, but I last wrote one years ago and it would simply be added well down the list where no one would see it. So I thought I should post it where people on this forum who buy peonies would look. I have called them and left a message.
