OK... we have a row of noid deep magenta peonies that my mother planted here probably 20++ years ago from four corms, from a friend. About three years ago, I dug a little up from the middle of the row and planted them in a new bed. They were buried really deep and I was pretty brutal with them, but they did fine, and this year, were very nice.
The bed these originally were in is very overgrown and I'm slowly moving things out of it to start over, so I didn't notice right away that where I dug some out, there was a bud that looked lighter than a normal deep magenta bud. I thought it was odd but really didn't think much more about it. Now the deep magenta peonies are finishing up, and I noticed this bud opened. It's medium pink, like a Sarah Bernhardt! What happened? I know peonies can be grafted, so maybe it reverted? It appears to be growing out from right where I dug. It's the same style as the deep color, heavily petaled with yellow stamens or pistils in the center, but is fragrant (deep one isn't), blooms later and is a dramatically different color.
Other possibility (I think) is that it's from seed? I do have white w/ pale pink accent, fragrant peonies, but this has never happened here before, at least not that I've noticed.
Any idea what this is all about?? It's the Magical Mystery Peony!!!
Here it is alongside the parent plant... somebody splain!!
