    my nephews found this in our back yard today and i have no idea what it is...its huge...please someone tell me what it is and if its harmful in any way...thanx Kat

    It's hard to tell from your picture but... big and green makes me think of tomato & tobacco hornworms. There's also some really beautiful months that come from BIG green caterpillars. Luna moths and Cecropia moths are a couple that come to mind. The regal moth has a caterpillar that gets almost 6 inches long. It's pretty scary looking too.

    Just went to the library... as far as I can tell it looks like a black swallowtail. The caterpillar feeds on members of the carrot family - parsley, Queen Anne's Lace, etc.
