Realizing it is an inappropriate solution for many, I nonetheless point to the success of deer population control in Princeton Township NJ. This is the most densely populated (by humans) state in the US, and statewide deer population has gone from 100,000 to nearly 200,000 in the last 40 years, a period of extraordinary growth of suburban residential building. With about 350 deer deaths by motor vehicle per year in the township 10 years ago, the township committee lunged headlong into a multi-pronged approach to deer management, which has pretty much devolved to a single prong: trap and euthanize. Oh, the Bambi lovers have keened and wailed and protested and gotten arrested, but today in many areas of town one can safely garden without fencing. Spring and summer months are incredibly more lush and colorful now that our flowers and shrubs feed a much smaller population deer. And this has stimulated further homeowner investment in landscaping and gardening. For the vast majority of our population it has been a win-win situation.
So maybe another solution is to lean on your town councilmen.
