Nice counter top kiln. Vulcan Model 111F Kiln. Great for Glass , Ceramics , PMC, Jewelry , Beads, Enameling , Small Pottery and more. Max temperature of the kiln is 2250 deg F. The kiln plugs into a regular grounded 115 v plug , it draws 13.5 amps so a breaker at 20 amps or possibly even at 15 amps in some cases would be sufficient. The firing chamber is 11 x 11 x 4 1/2 inch deep. The nice thing about this kiln is he has an infinite switch and a built in analog pyrometer! Used 1 time!! Also have 2 shelves and 6 post that I will toss in. Please help! is this a good buy for $400. Would it be large enough for me to melt glass and wine bottles?
All help appreciated. Thank you
Faye

Faye,
You would need at least 13"s for the bigger wine bottles, but the smaller bottles would fit in there. Draw an 11"x11" square on a piece of paper and lay a big bottle sideways see if there is room.

As for the price, I don't have a clue, but I do know that New, they run quite a bit.. did you check Paragon.com out to see if what the prices are? You would get a good idea if you are saving $$ by buying this one..

It looks great, too bad it is so small. Let's see what others have to say about it.. I certainly don't have any experience with Kilns (too chicken yet) so haven't tried mine out. I will have company again, my son and grandson are arriving tonight for about a week.

if your going to spend that much for a used kiln you could get a new one with a programed timer for a little bit more ...

OK, I am a bit late getting in here, but I have always heard that you should buy the largest kiln you can afford.

Seems a little high at $400.
You can also fire gold leaf with it. Special firing at low heat.

Hello Mazda, I still do not have a kiln. I cannot justify the cost. Seems a lot to pay just to play at melting glass bottles. And I wouldn't know how to begin to use it.

How about showing something you've done using your kilns. The more I see, LOL the more I will be inspired to get one.

Here is a pendant I made. I have made lots of pendants and earrings. When you woth with fused glass, you never throw any little piece away -- you will always find a use for little bits of glass.

This pic was taken before I glued the bails on the pendants. But you can get an idea.

Thank you Mazda, love all your items. The windchime is awesome. I cannot imagine how you get a plate with design. I know I would love having a kiln. Maybe I should put a kiln on the top of my want list.

while Im not a kiln user delphi stained glass sells all kinds of books and supplies for all different kinds of kiln work. I I have used them for over 20 yrs for stain glass supplies and love them. I buy only from them no matter where I live. they dont do pottery kind of clay but they do carry fused glass, PMC in both silver and brass and many other tools, supplies and items of interest.. if you have questions they even have a help line you can call.. No I dont get a cut for plugging them but when you find a company with good prices and great service its nice to let others know about them
be brave and be bold...lol..have fun playing wiht your new toy!

Mazda, I'm usually just a lurker on Dave's but I browse many of the threads. I was really interested in the jewelry, windchimes, etc that you showed in your posts. I am a 70-year-old widow with some health problems but I still like to make gifts for my children, grandchildren and friends. I was intrigued with what you were describing and as I already have a kiln, it is something I would like to try. Would it be possible for you to suggest some books, web sites and/or any other information so that I can learn more about the craft? I have no desire to make things to sell but know they would be welcomed by my family. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.

I am making jewelry for the first time...and wonder...also for the underglaze..when i paint my project and dries can i add the clear glaze on top of the underglaze then or do i fire it and let cool..and then add clear glaze to it..then put bac to fire...thanks!

I always did two firings sometimes three. Make sure you get you under glaze on really well with two coats, allow drying time between coats. Then fire. Remove and do the same with the clear glaze letting each coat dry betwwen application. If I wanted to add gold I would do a third special firing, it is a low heat firing. Hope this helps.
