Welcome to DAILY PICS VOL. 118. New contributors most welcome. pelletory will do the hyperlink - thanks pelle.

This is one of a pair of Pacific Black Ducks who have visited us at home each winter for several years. This species has been corrupted by domestic ducks in the Eastern States, but here in Western Australia, they remain pure.

Yesterday we were doing some fence work when I noticed a commotion at one of the feeders. It has removable metal trays with tiny round holes at the bottom. This poor little American Goldfinch had a toenail stuck, and was unable to free himself.

Feeder now retired...

Posh feeder for a posh bird Mrs Ed!

Nanny, I have a baby Woodpecker too! Looks like we are all seeing WP babies, pelle too! Dull here too, sun for a while in the afternoon then it was too much glare! Sweet Catbird fledgling.

tiger, don't they look so much smaller when you get them in your hand, glad you saw him.

Must be a sight seeing those Eagles adelbert.

I had lots of baby birds around today so might put them in another thread.

The female great Spotted Woodpecker was back many times today, now I know why she was so keen yesterday. She brought her baby! So did the House Sparrows and Blue Tits!

My pleasure, pelle.

Thanks, Nanny. This ones mate was close by at all times. I do have shots of them together. I'll see if I can locate one.

Well done tigerlily, first to pick up on the distress sounds, second to successfully free it and third to dispense with the offending feeder.

Great shots of the aerial dogfight albertcat.

Nice shots, Wallaby. You've sure captured the chaffinch's expressions so well. What gorgeous birds the Jackdaws are. They look like they are intelligently weighing up their options. Are they noted for their intelligence?

Thanks, Kim. What's happening with your charges?

What a truly exotic feeder, Mrs Ed. The fruit is so well coordinated to the colour of the bird.

Wow, what remarkably clear shots of the sparrow, Grasmussen. Beautiful.

This image is of Pink and Grey Galahs at Kalbarri, a beautiful coastal town about 600 kilometres north of Perth. They are a much deeper pink than the ones we have here.

I took this shot of cormorants (probably Pied Cormorants), at the Leschenault Inlet, approximately 150km south of Perth, a few days ago. I felt as if I was entering the film set of "Deliverance", it was so isolated. I was on my own and my imagination was running riot, expecting banjo-toting varmints to step out onto the gravel roadway. I was a bit spooked All of a sudden I encountered a bus load of elderly residents from an aged care facility, out for a barbeque lunch. Whew! So, I hope you can appreciate the effort I went to to grab this rather poor shot.

Wallaby, I read the hyperlink about the jackdaws. Interesting. You can see the intelligence in their eyes.

With your one-legged Great Tit, if the missing leg has happened recently, there is always a chance of infection setting in. However, if it is an old and healed wound, it will probably cope quite well. We've had a Grey Butcherbird visiting us for supplementary feeds for well over two years. One of its legs has been rendered completely useless - I suspect it may have been grabbed by a Magpie - its right leg is kind of out from and backwards from its body. It still has circulation and the foot on the useless leg can still open and close, but because it's pointing skywards, it cannot use it to perch. We contemplated catching it and taking it to an avian veterinarian, but decided against this because of the stress it would experience for what may possibly be an adverse outcome. If it was clearly struggling, we'd risk it. We have no idea how its feathers and beak remain in such good condition as it is unable to preen normally. Resiliant little thing. I'll try to get a photo of it showing its bung leg.

There were a lot more Cormorants than that. They were spooked by the banjos

Nice shots, sybil. I wonder if there had been more than one baby Loon to begin with. Oh, and sybil, you are the prettiest of them all.

Margaret - there are a great number of Bald Eagles nesting near this particular lake and yes, I can well imagine that there may have been other Loon babies. The soft, parental - almost cooing sounds the adults were making with the little one were so sweet to hear; this in sharp contrast to the screaming they do when alerted to danger. A couple of weeks back we watched an Eagle circling a Loon family - so vulnerable.

They lay 1-3 eggs, most often 2. So there might well have been another, but not definitely so. The chicks would be at some risk from eagles (not a lot though, as they're very good swimmers underwater), rather more risk from large fish, and human activities such as getting caught in fishing nets, and pollution.

I think the Great Tit's leg or lack of is an old injury, there's looks to be no fleshy bits showing!

This is the one with the bare patch on it's head, maybe they all got attacked by a Magpie or something when still in the nest. It's strange to have so many with different problems.

Yeah, you gotta be quick on the draw with those titmice...they swoop in, grap a seed, and swoop right back out again.
Nice pics Nanny

When I stopped by the pond yesterday, a couple of the Bullocks Oriole babes were at the top of the nest, hopping about and very noisy when mom would come in w/ food. I knew they were soon to fledge, so I went back later and found this one several feet below the nest.

I'm posting this one to show how dangerous the nesting area could be to the babes. People fish at the pond and frequently leave lots of tangled monofilament behind. It's often used in nest building, and I fear the babes might get tangled. Each time I go there I pick up discarded line from the ground and bushes. Much of it gets hung up in the tall trees when casting. The town didn't participate in the annual parks clean-up a couple weeks ago. Such a pity.

Great pics everyone!

We went to the park again, but it was noonish, and aside from a few ducks, most of the birds were wisely hidden away from the sun. So nothing new to show today.

But I'm enjoying everyone elses. :D

knophofia, the baby coot is just gorgeous. Both nice shots and I'm not being smart when I say the water looks really fluid.

Nice pics, Nanny. The colour of the Indigo Bunting is breathtaking.

That is one of the scariest bird environments I've ever seen, tigerlily. Unfortunately there are people out there that don't know or simply don't care what happens when they discard things. I have a practice of never leaving the beach empty handed. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not nicking things from people's bags). I know a lot of people who practice similarly and take other people's rubbish with them when they leave.
