I have purchased this beautiful Alocasia Amazonica in April 2008 and some of the new leaves are turning yellow and dying. I keep it moist, and I keep it indoors, in an area that provides partial light. I have noticed little black flies on the plant. Perhaps that is the problem. If so, I don't know how to get rid of them. I sprayed with the soapy insecticide but the flies are still there. What should I do? What is causing the leaves to turn yellow and die?
The flies are a symptom, but not the cause. If you are keeping your plants constantly moist, that's the problem. They need to be allowed to become dryish between waterings. Constant moisture will usher in rot, which is what the flies are hovering around for.
