Hi There,

I'm not an official market gardener, so I hope you all don't mind me jumping in here. I have a couple restaurants interested in buying my home grown tomatoes. I'm open to the idea, but I wouldn't know what to charge. It was their idea, not mine, so I'm still undecided about it. It's not quite like selling to the public I would assume since they are probably used to getting stuff wholesale. But on the other hand, this whole tomato scare is causing them to seek out more carefully handled produce.

Last year, I sold some tomatoes to a restaurant nearby. The guy just gave me $20 for a big box of assorted (full size and cherry) tomatoes. I didn't weigh it. I was actually trying to give them away to neighbors and he offered to buy it. I had more than I could do anything with and was about to leave on vacation. Normally, I would have canned or made sauce or salsa with the extra tomatoes, but no time. He said he'd buy anything else I had too, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, beans.

So if you don't mind sharing this info, may I take a poll? What do you charge for ripe tomatoes? (or any of the other veggies listed above). I'm growing some unusual (non red, striped, etc.) varieties this year. Around here, tomatoes are about $4 lb in the grocery store, but I'm sure restaurants don't pay that price.

Thanks for the input.

Jen
