I gotta try and make the dog too , but like you Sis gotta find the time. I got the mums growing if they ever flower.
Did see though but you ya leave the starp on around the basket and the floral block or do ya take it off at some point? |

That way if i mess it up I don't feel so bad cuz ya can alwys use artificial for other things and rewire if ya cut the stems to short |

elle, it depends on the size of handbag you want to make.
1 whole block for a big bag.
3/4 block for medium bag
1/2 block for small bag.
Cissy, it can be made with artificial flowers and greenery. or Fabric, dried flowers, or a mix of whatever you've got!

| Ok, Terri, you asked for it! LOL. I'll preface the pictures by saying this is a garden in the works. What you are about to see looks baaaaad. But digging up clay to very hard. I use only a shovel and my right food, hands gloved in ...uh, gloves. Pruners to cut the old tree roots growing UNDER THE CLAY ARRGGHH LOL. I left off some of the flowers I plan on taking out of contaners to plant. The pictures of my plants in the ground are the ones I have done in the last 3 days.
The last picture is of three of the containers I am repotting in the ground.

Looks like you are really getting on with the work there in tough clay conditions. It's going to look fab all planted up.
Are you going to put down some mulch? to retain moisture and improve the soil?
Will the coleus survive the winter outside where you are? they are indoor plants here mostly. Lovely coloured leaves, great for arranging!!!!!! JOKE>
Keep up the good work Cis. Thanks for showing me how it's taking shape. Keep me updated won't you? LoL! |

| Terri, yes they do overwinter here. I have several coleus that are in pots. I have a strawberry jar. I am going to take cuttings from my coleus and plant them in the strawberry jar. Oh I forgot, the coleus I do have in pots are cuttings I started this past winter...indoors. This is the plant they came from :) The Gerber plant is with it. Both are in a planter box. | Well, the strawberry jar will be a work in progress. I read how to do it with coleus cuttings right here at Daves. Probably in the Coleus section...? LOL. Anyway, supposedly I am to fill pot with soil up to the first opening, then put some soiless mix and stick in cutting from the outside into the hole...and so on and so forth. Of course for the first few days, the colues will wilt and THEN I hope will pop back up. We'll see... |

| Sis-e - Happy upcoming Birthday! Looks like a nice work in progress. Your coleus are stunning. I have been following the same coleus thread and plan on taking cuttings from a few of mine this year to propagate inside for the winter. I have even though of taking a few cuttings from a few stray plants I have seen around work, do you think that is okay?
Looks like your clay is nasty - how much amendment have you had to put in with it? Mulch may help to keep the moisture in as am sure the clay sucks every bit of it up. I have one area that was a lot of clay, I made the mistake of mixing in sand, and well go figure it turned into the equivalent of cement. Steve had to till it all again and we had to start over. Good thing we all enjoy a hard day's work. |
Sis_E (Cissy) San Jose, CA (Zone 9b)
August 14, 2008 11:04 AM Post #5413130
| Omg about the sand/cement. Gee, I am glad I didn't do that. All I did was add perlite and vermiculite to help with drainage to each hole for a plant. Then, don't ask me why lol, I added to each hole, a hand full of seed starter mix and a pinch of root hormone (just because LOL). Then I lifted each plant out of container and set in hole and add the soil from the container, plus new bagged soil. So far so good, but it's been only a day for the section I was working on. The section I did 2 days previous is doing very well. So far, no shocked (gasp) plants.
I don't have a rototiller. Our yard is hard, but it is very small as well. I am proud of what I have done, but have to do a "wait and see" thingie-bob ;)
Thanks for birthday wishes! How sweet...um sweet 62 for meeeeee. Yayaya, social security at last LOL |

| Hi Terri and thank you! For the galvanized bucket set, I used Folkart Outdoor Acrylic paints. No water is used. Colors are vibrant and that set can be used outdoors w/o degradation at all. If not going outside, regular acrylic paint can be used too.
For the candles, I used Folkart Enamel Acrylic paint. Regular acrylic won't stick for long LOL. But first...and this is for glass and galvanized tin as well, you need to rub down with rubbing alcohol first. This gets rid of any oils on the surface ...particularly on candles. Unscented is best, but scented can be used. Just remember to use the alcohol first. Those candles can be burned too :) |

There is a little teeny warping, but certainly nothing bad at all. The paint is in large tubes and quite a variety of colors. I use brushes made to paint on wood or paper. The brushes are Plaid Folkart made for the Donna Dewberry One Stroke Painting method. :) HOpe that helps, Sally! |

They can be found online or at craft stores like Michaels. Folkart also makes acrylic paints, but they warp paper too much. That's why I like Kaiser paints. The flowers you see on the cards are hand painted using the folkart brushes made to use on paper along with the Kaiser paints I found at Scrapbook Island store :) |

It's about 97 degrees...yesterday was 100. Wow, poor plants need extra care in the evenng to survive the next day!
How are you doing beside being an amazingly nice person? :) |

I do not like temps abover 72 and then there has to be a cooling breeze. Man, if I controlled the weather, I'd be a happy camper...and gardener...and...and... ;) |
