Hi all! I have a top load washing machine. When I turn the knob, nothing happens. I will not start filling with water. If I close the lid and turn the knob a little farther, it will spin the clothes but that is all. I have checked to see if some how the faucets got turned off...nope, they are still on. Does anyone know what could be wrong it or what I should check for? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Christy

Christy, I have a similar problem here. The water here contains a lot of iron and the Iron particles have stopped up the screens on the input to the washer. Keeping the water from filling the washer. At first I would remove the hoses from the washer and clean them (it did not take long for this operation to become "old"). Then I put the hoses into a "combiner valve" and now fill the washer manually. It works and I probably waste less water this way.

The other possibility is that the water input solenoid on the machine is bad. These machines are not hard too work on. If you are electrically/mechanically inclined. Or have a friend who is.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response Dyson. We had that problem all the time when we had well water and it would have to be shut off for work. Somehow when the water would go back to the washing machine lines, it would clog like you are talking about. We have city water lines out to the country now, so I don't know if the clogging could happen. I will check to make sure though, just in case.

I remember when this happened before, the machine would make a wirring noise, then the slightest trickle would come out. This time, no noise or water. Just kaput. We have now checked a fuse to see if it had blown...that was fine. My DH thought it might be the solenoid too...so he bought that part today...oh no, wrong part and no refunds so we are out $42 and we now think it is the timer...another $70. By the time this is said and done we could have gotten a used one. (sigh)

I'm going to check the screens myself...DH didn't because he didn't think that was the problem. If it is, I am really going to kick myself!!

If it is not making the usual "humming" noise during the fill cycle then it is probably the solenoid or the contacts on the timer, you can connect a volt meter to the solenoid contacts and watch for the voltage to determine which.

make sure your getting power to the fill valve if you are but the valve is not opening they might be bad, however there is a hot and cold water solenoid so the odd of the both being bad is ????

If you have set the temp to one "cold" and no noise can be heard then set the temp to the other "hot", If no noise can be heard then the problem is in the timer or water level circuits.

If it can be heard on one and not the other then the problem is with the silent solenoid.

Again If your water contains iron it and you hear noise but get no water flow - check the screens.

I had fancy hoses with special fittings that were supposed to protect against leaking. I got them from Lowes a year ago. The service man replaced the hose and said it was a common problem since they started selling these hoses. They just stop all water flow for no good reason.
