No leaves to be had this time of year (neighbors are too darn efficient, and we only have one 2 yr old maple tree), and no straw on hand, either. Can I cover with dried grass clippings? I did add one layer of grass clippings last week, but then re-read your article and the comments, and saw that you don't want too much nitrogen. Do I need to pull the grass back out, so I get taters and not just lovely green leaves? Should I add a bag of soil or something instead, for lack of nice light fluffy materials?

Enjoying this experiment, and my neighbor keeps wandering over to check it out, too. Maybe next year he'll have a barrel of potatoes, too!

You can use both soil and the dried grass clippings. You need to watch the grass clippings, not only for nitrogen, but for heat! Grass clippings are one thing that will make a compost pile "heat" up, so be a little careful. Hope you have great success! Nice to know I've "corrupted" others with this idea! LOL

Good luck,

Cathy
