Moved into a new house over the winter and these are planted everywhere but only 1 of them is producing flowers i have asked everyone around and nobody seems to know what they are. The tallest flower is about 3-4 ft tall. Any help will be much appreciated.

CONSIDER YOURSELF "LUCKY!"

AROUND HERE THEY ARE CALLED "RED HOT POKERS"

I CAN NOT GET MINE TO GROW THAT TALL FOR ANYTHING
I THINK THEY ARE A REAL UNIQUE FLOWER
A NICE ACCENT TO ANYONE'S GARDEN

Thank you for the quick reply. as for getting it to grow as tall as it is i really didn't do anything to it but water it when we didn't get any rain due to me not knowing what it was. It is however in sunlight all day. One more quick question any idea why the others are not doing anything?

How big are the others? I think these can take a few years to really get going, I have some that I planted a couple years ago, they were very small when I planted them and none of them have bloomed for me yet. Or on the other hand if they're too big maybe they need to be divided.

Zone 6 (sometimes named 5 ) here and this is a red hot poker that is in it's second summer. Full sun on the top slope of a raised bed.

The bud's are very pale...getting darker as the plant matures I'm assuming. Check out the funky "twin bud" in the middle.

Hope mine get tall as yours =)

There are several types of red hot pokers and different colours but the bright orange ones are normally the most common ones grown and colour wise look like pokers, they do like lots of organic matter in the soil to help feed the plants, you will get the best results after they have been growing for about four years as this allows them to form larger clumps, they are tough plants and dont like their roots too wet like in very shady damp soil, they multiply buy root production themselves, the first year normally just leaves, there after flowers, enjoy and split up say after about 5 years or they will grow more foliage than flowers. Good Luck, WeeNel.
